... but get a guidebook and a normal moleskin.
Unfortunately this product failed on both counts.
It was too crammed with Beijing material that wasn't normal pages, so it was too stiff and didn't have the tactile feel of a normal moleskin notebook. The map was useless, a separate foldout map, or a phone app does a much better job. Not enough pages of note space.
IMO these city books are a good marketing idea (after all I bought one) but not a useful purchase.

I thought I'd write a counterpoint to the very damning previous eview. I bought this for a family member and today we got an email saying, "The Beijing subway has also been really cool and my guide of Beijing from Nell has been excellent, the teachers keep asking for it because it's so useful!"

Great portable map and notebook 19 Sep 2010
By Rhandhali - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Moleskine has promoted these city notebooks as a "build your own guidebook" product and I will be the first to admit that I didn't really use it for that purpose. I purchased this book because of the maps that come with it. The first 1/8th or so of the book is a well detailed, well organized map of the city and includes a portable subway map. I referenced this map constantly during my time in Bejing. The streets are indexed alphabetically by their Pinyin transliteration but with the Chinese characters included. The key map and the subway map were the two things I looked at the most as they allowed me to easily get my bearings in Beijing

Aside from the maps this is a great little notebook; it fits in your pocket and took all of the abuse I gave it. It has sections you can fill out for places you've visited if you like; I didn't use those as much as the blank, unlined pages that make up the bulk of the notebook. If you're spending any amount of time in Beijing I would highly recommend it.

not convinced 27 July 2010

I am a fan of Moleskine and similar blank books in general, so I picked this up for my trips to Beijing. Maybe I haven't figured out how this was intended to be used, but I'm not really convinced (after my first trip) that this thing was particularly helpful. Perhaps after I've traveled BACK to the city several times over the course of time it will begin to show its value?
