The study of evolution at the molecular level has given evolutionary biology a new impetus. Phylogenetic 'trees' of gene sequences are a poweful tool for recovering evolutionary relationships among species, and can be used to answer a broad range of evolutionary and ecological questions. This is a good general text book for those interested in Molecular systematics. It is clearly written but the subject matter itself requires a background knowledge of molecular biology and systematics to make full use of this text book. I found it useful for a general background introduction to the field, before researching specific topics further. It would probably be most useful for a postgraduate student increasing their knowledge in this area.

This text concentrates on how to use gene sequence information to inferphlogenetic relationships between homologous genes and between organisms.It gently reviews the basic biochemistry and molecular biology andpopulation genetics needed to get to grips with this topic.
