Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

"Swamp Noir" is how Robert Fisher and his colleagues in this Bostonian collective once described their music and it's as good a phrase as any. Above all, their third--and best--album is moody, atmospheric music of monumental proportions. One moment it can help you visualise the wide-open spaces of the western deserts, in the next you're in a dank warehouse comforting Fisher's baritone-voiced laments. Mojave is distressing yet consoling; gloomy yet enlightening. Above all, however, it's the rich textures that they achieve through employing virtually every conceivable acoustic instrument that makes this stand out above the Sparklehorses and Sixteen Horsepowers of this world. They know how to make things sparse and in "The Work Song" and the entirely gorgeous "I Miss You Best" they have songs that can never ever be eradicated from the listener's memory. Mojave is quite simply one of the most moving and captivating albums...ever. --Tim Perry

I had never realy heard WGC before,,but what a treat! The new west was never better..all darkness, texture and mood...not an electronic device in sight and conjours up images of the American west ...even in Stockport (which is some feat!)

I'm impressed 31 May 2000

I watch the stars run away/ They can't wait to leave/ the sky today/

Thus begins Another Lonely Night, the first track of Willard Grant Conspiracy's _Mojave_. And it got me. Bad. It's a beautiful song.

The rest of the album is uneven and repetitive, but it has moments of sheer brilliance. Take Archy's Lullaby, for instance...slow, beautiful, haunting. It's one of those songs that glues itself to one's mind. Take The Work Song and its lovely lyrics...soothing, and peace inspiring.

The Nick Cave comparison doesn't really strike me as appropriate. WGC's vocalist sounds a lot like Nick, but the music is also a lot different. It might appeal to Cave's fans though. I know I am one, and I loved WGC.

But anyway, this is a band that needs to be discovered. They're _very_ good.

Devastaingly somber, deeply foreboding music. 6 May 2000
By Jeanne Lightly - Published on Amazon.com

The cumulative effect of listening to these story-songs, steeped in rich lyrical detail that's allusive rather than conclusive is like hearing a summer storm brewing in the dark distance. It only sounds quiet, but you know what's coming.
