Book Description

7 Nov 2013

When the Marines destroy a terrorist training camp in the Libyan desert, they also kill both the parents of a ten-year-old boy, Mohammed Maguire.

Brought back to Ireland, the land of his mother's birth, young Mohammed is treated as a public relations commodity by both sides of an argument that he doesn't understand - but which he can see with the clear eyes of a child.

Wickedly funny and wonderfully abrasive, MOHAMMED MAGUIRE is Bateman at his very best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking! 8 Mar 2003
Format:Paperback
I am not what can be considered a great reader. I tend to dip in and out of books as time allows, and therefore find myself taking weeks if not months to complete a novel! Mohammed Maguire however, proved such an intriging read that i completed it within a week!!! UNHEARD OF!!!
The characters are fantastic, as with all of Batemans work, and the story moves with such natural ease that it is impossible to find a good place to stop reading! You always want more!
You must read this book, no two ways about it.
However, when you've finished it, form an orderly queue behind me to bop Mr Colin Batemen on the nose! - Once you've read the book, you'll understand!

5.0 out of 5 stars Colin Batemans Best Yet... 10 April 2002
Format:Paperback
Having read most of Colin Bateman's 'Dan Starkey' novels - (also v.highly recommended)This is a wonderful change of direction, I just couldn't put it down right from the first line.
It has the same Colin Bateman dry wit and very individual Northern Irish humour with an unbelievably addictive story line.
If you weren't a fan before this book you will be.....

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Another superb book from Bateman. This is the second book Ive read by Bateman and I cant wait to start the next. The life of Mohammad Maguire is intriguing and takes turns you wouldnt expect, keeping you entertained right up until the last paragraph, where even though the twist in the end is obvious your still kept gripped by whats going to happen, definate 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only In Ireland 10 July 2003
By J. Cronin VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
This dark and fantastically funny little tale captures so easily the insanity that is Northern Ireland. Mohammed Maguire is the offspring of two international terrorists, an arab dad and an Irish mum. When both his parents are killed, Mohammed is brought back to Ireland and into the hands of peope who wish to use him as an emblem of the freedom movement. However, Mohammed has his own thoughts on affairs, frequently in contradiction to those of the others.
People hear what they want to hear and the story of how an ill-fitting prison suit leads to a riot and a hangover leads to a hanuger strike will have you laughing, and yet frighten you by how scarily accurate it is.
A great little novel, for anyone who wants a bit of humour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bateman at his best 14 Dec 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
...The story of a boy, parents an arab terrorist, mother an IRA fanatic makes for very funny and sad reading.
Nobody can reflect on human fralaties like Bateman, you want to laugh out loud but your symathy for the young boy is real and predictable.
It is impossible to say much about the story without giving away too much.Destined to be a box office hit, I really enjoyed this yarn stretching from the desert to NI in a very readable pace that ensured I finished the book in less that a day.Try for yourself and you will not put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!! 12 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback
I read this book when I was a lot younger and I still love it to this day. Colin Bateman writes like no one else, I am constantly catching myself laughing out loud in public. If you want a great book that is by no means serious this is the book for you!! After this you will be a Bateman fan for life!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Cracking Read 4 Nov 2008
By bader40
Format:Hardcover
I'm not going to wax lyrical about the plot and characters, anyone who has read any Bateman books will know what to expect...However this book just ooozes charm and i don't think i've ever read a book as quick.
Buy this book and i promise you won't regret it, it made me laugh out loud and in parts even brought a humungus lump to my throat ( i even had to resort to a tissue at one point because my eyes started watering...i must be going soft in my old age).

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book from a fantastic author 5 Dec 2001
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Another excellent book from Bateman. Typically 'different', yet very readable storyline. I read it in one sitting. Some parts are quite poignant, but as a rule, don't read it in public spaces or you could embarass yourself by laughing out loud. Highlights include a very funny trip to see a shrink called Tarantino....Enjoy!

and a story line totally unexpected yet a believable scenario. The desert scene as the rest of the book was so well written, that at one stage I was positively angry. Read more
