From Amazon.co.uk

Mohabbatein ("Love Stories") is, as the title suggests, thoroughly concerned with love and romance; it's a hugely popular Bollywood blockbuster about three young men at an exclusive boarding school who fall in love with three local young women. Opposition comes from the head of the school (Amitabh Bachan) and support from the violin teacher, who introduces an element of Dead Poets Society into a story which references both Grease (1978) and West Side Story (1961). Actually this is Aditya Chopra's follow-up to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), which also starred Shahrukh Khan. The rest of the featured players are almost all new, and inject a vitality into every scene so that even at three-and-a-half hours Mohabbatein rarely drags. The soundtrack sweeps all before it in the seven big production numbers, which add a Western pop-video gloss to the complex, exhilarating musical arrangements. Likewise the choreography fuses traditional Indian elements with contemporary Western dance, and while the men are handsome and charming, the girls are stunningly beautiful, breathtakingly sensual, and scantily clad in a thoroughly modern fashion. Mohabbatein is a colourful, humorous though haunting romantic drama, which even those unfamiliar with Indian cinema should find highly enjoyable.

On the DVD: The feature is in Hindi with subtitle options for English, French, Spanish, Arabic and Malay. The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound is often atmospheric, though only really comes into its own in the dynamic musical numbers. The anamorphically enhanced presentation of the original 2.35:1 cinema image is NTSC; while colours are excellent and the detail level well above VHS there is a slight lack of sharpness compared to the best PAL transfers. The second disc contains 64 minutes of English language interviews, 11 TV trailers and an anamorphic theatrical trailer, a scored stills gallery, 18 minutes of deleted scenes, including one musical number, with optional English language director's commentary, plus a 44-minute "making-of" documentary. The attractive packaging puts all but the most lavish US releases to shame. --Gary S Dalkin

A tale about love and what one is willing to do in order to get and keep the one they love. The story tells of a man (amitabh bachchan) who is hurt because his daughter kills herself for love.Consequently the man ,who is the principal of a school, becomes harder. He masks his pain with anger. Then comes a new addition to the school, a music teacher (shahrukh khan). He is the complete opposite of the head master. He lives for love,is willing to do anything for love. And unknowingly to the headmaster, he is the man his daughter killed herself over. She killed herself due to their unrequited love.A power struggle then happens as the fight on one end to ensure change and on the other to ensure that things stay the same.A beautiful story!!! --platform47.com

MOHABBATEIN is a story of the battle between what the two stellar men Narayan Shankar and Raj Aryan stand for. Two stubborn men who live their lives with completely opposing principles. One who stands for love and everything that the heart encompasses and the other who stands for discipline and fear and who believes that love only leads to pain and weakness.

The basic plot is refreshingly different from the Mills & Boons fares one is so used to witnessing in film after film. The conflict between Amitabh and Shah Rukh is another trump card of this enterprise. Moreover, the three love stories have been cleverly woven in the narration and heighten the conflict between Amitabh and Shah Rukh.

A must watch for all Shahrukh and Amitabh Bachchan fans. --platform47.com

Mohabbatein is a tale about love and the extent one can goto in order to profess it.The scoring point of the movie is of course the enrapturing conflicts between Narayan Shankar and Shahrukh Khan. And both have been excellent on them. The Big B definitely proves heavier than Shahrukh Khan in melodramatics and rendering the intensity to the role but Shahrukh Khan is not left much behind. This perhaps is the best performance by the Big B after his comeback. It's a delight to watch him in his full charm. He certainly is the undisputed king. Among the new comers, Uday Chopra and Shamita Shetty leave some impression; the rest of the lot is just passable.

Definitely worth a watch once --platform47.com

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCEPTIONAL EPIC!!! 12 Aug 2002

Format:DVD
What can I say? Aditya Chopra has done it again...his follow up to DDLJ is as emotional, as awe-inspiring and as memorable as its unconventional predecessor. Mohabbatein really brings out the best talents of both Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan, and the jaw-dropping beauty of Aishwarya Rai really makes her 'ghostly' character come to life.
The brilliant direction from Aditya Chopra has realy set a landmark for Bollywood cinema and has already firmly placed "Adi'" as one of the most exciting and original directors to grace our screens for a long time.
Yash Raj Films have really pulled out all the stops for this lavish DVD, and we are really in for a treat with a spectacular two-disc set, not forgetting the additional exclusive postcards and leaf-bookmark, a pleasant touch to an already incredible DVD.
The story, centering around a strict eductaional institution, Gurukul, and the fight of three young students against its Headmaster, Amitabh Bachchan, in the name of love, really brings a very original idea to the hero/heroine drivel churned out from the industry for too long. Shahrukh's powerful performance really brings meaning to his character's fight in the name of love, and the equally if not over-shadowing performance by the Big B, portrays the eternal battle love has with fear, splendidly.

All in all...an epic of all proportions, with romance, humour, lots of tears, and brilliant performances!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Triple Love Relationships 21 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Format:DVD
This is the first Hindi film I saw and I must say that I have been overwhelmed by it. Despite its 3 hours one would not think of such a great movie as a long boring film. I for one loved the way it deals with love stories between the young people (3 couples), but also between the generations (young vs. old generation) and also between the famous actors and the new actors which were given a chance for the first time in "Mohabbatein". As for the music, the melodies quickly become earworms and you will be suprised to find yourself humming "Chalte chalte"! For those of you who, like me, Have been intringued to watch some really good Bollywood film I suggest you give this one a try!

The film would be very entertaining, if it were not for the inconsistency of the scenery. It was very off putting to see one scene at the school when it was clearly autumn or early spring, ie cold and windy, to then find the next scene by a swimming pool where the climate was suddenly mediterranean! Otherwise your typical Bollywood entertaining film - music wasn't up to much though! The story follows 3 young boys who attend a very elite school - Gurukul. They meet 3 girls outside of the school - however the strict head of the school does not allow women into the school. The scene is then set for the young boys to break the rules - gently encouraged by the new teacher (who has a history with the school, which slowly unfolds throughout the film).
