"Mogambo" (1953) is a good film with an excellent ending that makes you want to watch it again. Of course, the excellent cast and the place where the story was filmed help, and a lot.

This movie was directed by John Ford, and filmed in Africa. The plot is simple, but quite effective. Victor Marswell (Clark Gable) is a safari guide whose like is disrupted when a beautiful woman, Eloise Kelly (Ava Gardner), shows up at his camp, looking for a majarajah. Unfortunately for her, her "acquaintance" has left and she has to remain in the camp at least until the next boat arrives. Eloise starts to fall for Victor, and their attraction seems mutual, but not meant to be.

However, things are further stirred up when a couple, Professor Donald Nordley (Donald Sinden) and his wife Linda (Grace Kelly) arrive to Victor's complex for a safari. The problem is that now Eloise likes Victor, Victor is attracted to Linda, and Linda has feelings for Victor but is married to Donald, who is not aware of what is happening around him and is only interested in looking for gorillas.

Of course, that situation is a good recipe for entertainment. Throw in a great scenery and some wild animals, and you have a very entertaining movie. All in all, I give this movie 3.5 stars, and I think it is worthwhile to recommend it :)

Mogambo is a 1953 film directed by John Ford, featuring Clark Gable, Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly and Donald Sinden. Grace Kelly won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and the film was nominated for two Oscars, Best Actress in a Leading Role (Gardner), and Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Kelly).

Mogambo is a lavish remake of the classic film Red Dust (1932). That also featured Gable in the lead role.

The plot sees Victor Marswell (Gable) living in Africa and capturing animals for zoos, circuses and animal trainers. He also takes visitors on safari. One day he returns to his camp to find that a sexy American, Honey Bear Kelly (Gardner), has arrived unannounced. She was invited by an Indian Maharajah who has since left. She and Marswell are attracted to one another but after the arrival of an anthropologist and his wife, Donald and Linda Nordley (Kelly), Marswell develops an interest in the beautiful Linda. As they all set off on safari to find gorillas for Donald Nordley's research, tensions and passions rise as both women desire Marswell.

Great cast, and a wonderful perfomance from the very beautiful Ava Gardner, who should have won the best actress award.

Mogambo sees the King ending his reign at MGM with a solid, albeit heavily reworked, remake of Red Dust. This time round Gable's a great white hunter in Africa trapping animals for zoos and circuses, but the mixture is much the same as before, albeit shot on location with a little less spice. Ava in the shower doesn't generate the heat of Harlow in a barrel, but at least she's the real deal compared to Grace Kelly's mannered turn as a rather unappealing bad tempered wimp (maybe he just has a thing for faux posh totty?). John Ford's direction is curiously anonymous: without his screen credit, I'd never have guessed he was the director in a million years. If anything, it feels more like a middling Richard Thorpe or Jack Conway film, but either way it's pure MGM all the way- a well-cooked steak, but no sizzle.

The transfer is good, though there are a few inconsistencies due to the master material available. The only extra is the enjoyably over the top original theatrical trailer.
