I have a very soft spot for this recording as it was my introduction to one of my favourite symphonies, on LP in the 1970s. Dilkes's is a more intimate version than the magisterial Boult on Lyrita, but it works very well - especially in the beautifully moving section at the end of the second movement. In fact the whole performance is excellent and this would definitely be my No 1 budget choice. Anyone who loves this symphony as much as I do will also want Heward's magnificent war-time recording with the Halle - but if I could only choose one recording I would happily opt for the Neville Dilkes, which has a special quality to it. The attractive couplings make this an even more desirable CD.

The best version 2 April 2012
By freddie
This is the best version that I know of this superb symphony. The close sound recording suits this interpretation of Moeran's Symphony in G minor perfectly. Dilkes, with his tense, urgent approach, gives the performance great passion and forward- drive that relates it to other 1930s symphonies like Walton's 1st and Vaughan Williams 4th. His sense of urgency catches the introspection and sense of menace in the piece and he deals with the problematic structure of the last movement better than anyone else I know. It does feel like a great Neo- Romantic British symphony. Highly recommended,
