E J Moeran's earliest forays into longer form works were all written for chamber ensembles, and the three works here are excellent examples of his early achievements. The first quartet, written in 1921, shows strong evidence of the twin influences of Ravel and English folk music, which Moeran was heavily engaged in collecting at the time. It is full of delightful lyricism.
The second quartet presents a problem to historians - it was found amongst his papers after his death and has never been accurately dated. Musical analysis would place it either as an early work or, paradoxically a very late work. In fact some performers have even suggested that the two movements are years apart, almost as if written by a different composer. Yet they work together and present a lively celtic lyric charm. The second movement is almost three movements in one, striking a distinct parallel to his Oboe Quartet of 1946.
The String Trio of 1931 is very much a pivotal work in Moeran's output and marks the first moves from his early to his mature style, leaving behing the Delius influences which were apparent in much of his 1920's output. This was the first piece completed after the death of Moeran's close friend, composer Peter Warlock, and the air of morbid gloom which pervades the central movements of the trio appears to be a reaction to Warlock's suicide. However he pulls out of this into a wonderful whirling jig to end with real verve and flourish.
This was the recording which announced the arrival of the Magginis on the world stage, and remains a vital addition to any music lover's collection.

This is a captivating collection of chamber works by this English composer, superbly played by the Maggini Quartet. The two quartets have a beauty and lyrical charm entirely of their own, and despite some echoes of Ravel, have a very distinct melodic character with folk influences, and a shimmering, otherworldly sense of fantasy, to delight and enchant the listener. The string trio, a later work, has a polished rhythm and concentrated melodic drive, as gentler elements give way to more dissonant forces, only to be quickly resolved, the viola leading the jubilant, accelerating conclusion. Excellent performances and recording. Gramophone Guide 'strongly recommended'.

Ernest John Moeran was a Norfolk lad of Anglo-Irish extraction, who studied with the great and good of early 20th century English classical music. These three pieces straddle the first world war, the trio being the latest, written in 1931.

They are a revelation in terms of how to use and develop lyrical themes, often derived from lesser-known English folk tunes.

If you like Delius, Frank Bridge, and maybe Vaughan Williams and Warlock too, you will be at home with Moeran's music. Happily, it works both as easy- and serious- listening.

The players are outstanding, and the timbre of their 18th century instruments is a beautiful mix of mellow and bright, though never too bright.

The recording is excellent, with just the right balance and reverb, great stereo definition, and plenty of fluid dynamic.

A definite contender for my Desert Island!

I liked what I heard and now wish to hear more, especially his famous symphony in G Minor. Pity he died so relatively young and under somewhat mysterious circumstances. He could write very engaging music and I for one enjoyed these pieces.

I just love this CD.

I wish Moeran had been able to write more as he's a gem of a discovery
