in essence - all the other reviews of "modus operandi" variously nail it with accurate overviews :
photek's lp has stood the test of time since it was released in 1995. its still far ahead of most of the electronic field - be it IDM, drum + bass, noir, detroit even. this lp is a intelligent, deep, dark + yes : his most coherent lp. you also need his "ni-ten-ichi-ryu" which is an astounding track ! its on youTube by the way.
according to Photek himself in Wire mag back in'97. the beats to each track could take up to a month each just to programme - this is apparent from the complexity, depth yet minimal sound he + source direct (his label mates) pioneered in jungle. minimal atmospheric beats, jazz textures (rhodes piano + upright bass samples/loops on "modus operandi" etc) , moody , complex + essential.
go find other quality laten night beats : for jungle/d+b : certificate 18, for detroit techno :underground resistance, for breakcore/dub-step :planet mu + for early 90's IDM on the warp label also.
