About the Author

Pat Ashforth and Steve Plummer are both mathematics teachers with an unconventional approach to the subject. Steve also trained to teach art. Pat is a fibre artist and has been a knitter almost all her life. They use fabric and fibre in many teaching situations with groups as diverse as university professors, Women's Institute groups, and children of all ages. Around 1990 they became addicted to modular knitting and, although they wander into other fields occasionally, most of their knitting has been modular ever since.

3.0 out of 5 stars But I don't like garter stitch!, 19 Oct 2010
This review is from: Modular Knits (Paperback)
This is otherwise a great book, but all the shapes are in garter stitch (knit every row 'plain') apart from one square right at the back... which isn't properly square! They don't work in stocking stitch because the ratio of rows to stitches is different.

4.0 out of 5 stars modular knitting, 21 July 2009
This review is from: Modular Knits (Paperback)
I have been modular knitting for quite a while now and thought I knew quite alot on the subject but this book will broaden my knowledge and techniques. Yes it is written with the American market in mind but there are coversion charts which only take a second to look at and alot of books now are written this way. I thoroughly look forward to knitting trapezoids, paralleograms, hexagons and many more of the shapes given. All in all I will find it very useful for designing my own garments. As far as I can see in my copy Colour in the actual text is spelt as in the OED and Americans spell it without the "U" as in the index (hardly significant)

2.0 out of 5 stars Been done better elsewhere, 28 May 2009

This review is from: Modular Knits (Paperback)
This book is written for the American market, the knitting needle are in US sizes, there is a conversion table at the back but it would be nice to have metric sizes included in the text. Wools and Yarns are described using US definitions; fingering; sports; worsted; not descriptions we use in the UK and if you don't know what they you'll have to look them up. Stitches used to create the garments are given the US names oh, and "colour" is spelt wrongly. V Irritating!

Publishers please note; if you're going to sell a book in the UK we'd appreciate it if you did your research first.

So apart from those little gripes, I was disappointed with the book. It shows you how to knit the basic shapes and how to join them together BUT you have to design your own garments which novices will find to be quite difficult. Some experienced knitters also find this taxing. The projects at the back of the book vary between uninspiring (lime green jumper) and downright ugly (brown bag)

Overall, this subject has been done better elsewhere.
