Sources of Meaning 12 Dec. 2008
By Anonymous - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Modes of Faith is a thematic reading of early 20th century literature that explores the question: where does one find meaning and solace after traditional religious faith has been lost?

In answering that question, the author discovers five surrogates for religion: art; escape to foreign lands (primarily to India); political movements and revolutions; myths; and utopias. Although the author limits his conclusions to the specific time-period and literature at hand, the themes he traces nevertheless seem to be more universal and recurring "types" that are as relevant today as they were in the early part of the last century.

This is a well-written, meticulously researched and engaging book that deserves five stars when judged against its own standards and intentions. Having said that, this is a scholarly text and not a popular work on how to find meaning post-religious faith. What's more, the book surveys many works in French and German that will be un-familiar to an English-oriented reader. Happily, in working through the texts, the author provides what amounts to an annotated introduction and bibliography of fictional and non-fictional narratives that express the themes that he is tracing. The author's crisp descriptions of the narratives make a first-hand acquaintance unnecessary though nevertheless desirable.
