This review is from: Modern Women Poets (Paperback)
This book was recommended to me by my poetry tutor as a good source for the study of poetry by modern women poets but even before that I had been meaning to buy a copy as I'd read a good flyer for it which included some samples of the poetry. It has lived up to its claims and is possibly one of the best buys for its range, subjects and styles of poetry over almost a century. I have found it inspiring and it will be a book I will return to time and time again. It introduces you to new poets and with approx 102 to choose from it's a fine choice. Each poet has a short biog and the Acknowledgements lists which poetry books the samples are taken from, a useful follow up to a poet one particularly likes. The first poem in the book was first published in 1916 (Charlotte Mew) and the last in 2005 (Caitriona O'Reilly). Many poets have several examples represented here. This anthology brings together a whole era of womens' poetry. It is a great book to dip into and is a good addition to ones reference library.
