More About the Author

Gareth King is the author of numerous books on language and languages for Routledge/Taylor & Francis and Oxford University Press, including a range of well-known and popular titles written for learners of Welsh.
He did his first degree during the Cold War, emerging from Cambridge University with the then customary degree in Russian, Czech and Old Church Slavonic, and sensibly went on some years later to do an MA in Old Irish and Scottish Gaelic at Aberystwyth, learning Welsh in the process.
December 2010 saw the publication of his extensive revision and expansion of George Campbell's well-known Concise Compendium of the World's Languages, followed exactly two years later by a similar updating of the original 2-volume edition.
He now divides his time between writing, acting as consultant for a major publisher, and pursuing a wide range of interests that includes fin-de-siècle Paris, curry and Finno-Ugrian languages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern Welsh Grammar - made easy 4 May 2001
Format:Paperback
Gareth King has written a number of excellent books for the learner of modern Welsh (e.g. Colloquial Welsh, also by Routledge). This book can be said to be a comprehensive reference grammar and the ideal next step for anyone who has progressed beyond a basic level of Welsh. It is especially suited to people familiar with Gareth King's other works and his approach to Welsh grammar.
What makes King different is that he describes very much the colloquial language - Welsh as it is spoken - which differs from formal and written Welsh in a number of key ways (vocabulary, grammatical endings and pronunciation). Sometimes this means the situation is complicated by various regional differences or a number of alternative forms and King's skill is that he makes these complexities comprehensible. The text is well laid-out and the explanations are lucid and easy to follow. The treatment of Welsh grammar is detailed but you never feel swamped - there is no detail for details' sake. The chapters are divided into traditional areas such as verbs, nouns etc. but the illustrative examples, unlike traditional grammars sound authentic. Throughout the book, English and Welsh are compared to clarify potential problems and a chapter on translating common phrases in Welsh is particularly useful. For the non-native speaker, this book is liable to answer most of the questions you will ever have.
This is not the book to begin studying Welsh with, as the detail is too great. However, if you wish to deepen your knowledge of the language or need a reference work to clear up any uncertainties, this book has a lot to recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grammar of Welsh 1 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is a detailed and comprehensive work on the grammar of the Welsh language. The scope and coverage here is immense. Attention is given to colloquial 'Welsh' in contrast to the more literary language. Kings attitude to other dialects is one in which he can describe rather than explain some points which could be called a part of the subject. His ideas are nothing short of better than those before. The books introduction explains that previous forms of 'Cymraeg Byw' are unsuccessful and that new ones based more around the writers work are the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Modern Welsh Grammar by Gareth King 2 Aug 2011
By dadllo
Format:Paperback
As a learner in Welsh or any other language,it is esential to have a user friendly grammar book. This product fulfils the role admirably. This book and Gareth kings Modern Welsh dictionary as an accompaniment, will answer all the questions you are ever likely to ask, through to canolradd stage. One major criticism though;there are several editions of this book on the market, unfortunately the publishers appear to have had a continuity problem in that; although all the items are included, they are not in the same unit or on the same page in each edition. This has led to problems when discussing Welsh language grammar with other students who also have the same book, but a different edition, which is particularly annoying if the discussion(as in my case) is held over the phone, or on Skype.
Otherwise the book is a Godsend.

Format:Paperback
I bought this book (in an earlier edition) and found it incredibly helpful. It answers all those questions that other grammars seem not to want to tell you about.
