2.0 out of 5 stars Too many errors to be recommended, 26 May 2002
This review is from: Modern Taekwondo (Paperback)
I bought this book based on other reviews I had read but after reading it I am very disappointed. As a professional author myself I understand that occassional errors get through the process but this book has too many and these cannot be ignored. As a black belt I am able to see the errors and make corrections but for people starting out the errors would lead to mistakes in the dojang. The photographs also show poor technique in many cases, e.g. high front kick with toes forward rather than back. In the descriptions of the poomse, there are several mistakes (particular Oh Jang). The authors really do need to revise this book soon if it is to be useful. I would recommend 'Taekwondo: the state of the art', a far superior book.

1.0 out of 5 stars I'm not sure what the point is of purchasing this..., 19 May 2007
By
This review is from: Modern Taekwondo (Paperback)
The title of this review does subtly let you know that I think this purchase really might not be worth it. For a start the book's function is mainly to serve as a reference for Pattern training. But in this it is flawed in two ways: First, as someone has already mentioned, it contains mistakes (though this might have been edited out in the latest edition which I have noticed is on sale). Secondly, all of the information that the book claims to sell is available free online anyway. So there is really nothing new or interesting contained within the pages of this text.

The book also contains a section on Tae Kwon-Do's history, which is not just innaccurate and vague, but a complete fairy-tale. The section on board-breaking (destruction) gives little more than pictures showing people doing it. And so it continues...

Unfortunately, given the above, I cannot think of a single reason to recommend this book to anyone. In my opinion there are far better alternatives either free online or for sale on this site, and I would suggest looking into them.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference book, 5 Nov 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Modern Taekwondo (Paperback)
From Warm-Ups to Patterns, Stances to Competition Rules, Modern Taekwondo covers it all in a clear and consise manner. Photographs accompany the text and every taegeuk, palgwe and black belt patterns are explained in detail taking the bulk of the book.

A must for any student as a permanent reference and reminder.
