While the country music moguls in the early sixties were worried about competing with rock'n'roll, Ray Charles had another idea that nobody could have foreseen, and that was to give country songs the full jazz treatment. His record label was initially appalled, but Ray had negotiated complete commercial freedom to record what he wanted. The results were far more successful than anybody could have imagined. With Ray's first album of country songs adapted to jazz proving so successful, Ray followed it up with another in similar vein. Both of those albums are featured here, along with six bonus tracks.

I can't stop loving you (a cover of a Don Gibson song, whose own version was the B-side of Oh lonesome me) became the biggest hit of Ray's career in both Britain and America, and made in both countries. You don't know me, Your cheatin' heart and (in America only) You are my sunshine were also big hits. Georgia on my mind (an American #1 hit and a minor UK hit) is an older recording but is among the bonus tracks.

My only slight annoyance is the spoken interjection in Deep in the heart of Texas, just before Ray sing the title line. It sounds fine to begin with, but is overdone. Other than that, this is an outstanding collection.

Ray periodically returned to the idea with albums titled Together again, Crying time and Love country style, but they were not as successful as the two presented here.

In 1962 Ray Charles released two of the greatest albums of the 20th century - Modern Sounds In Country & Western Music, Volumes 1 & 2. They were genre bending albums with an African American, the definitive exponent of soul music, re-defining the music of the white working classes.

The albums produced five massive hit singles: "I Can't Stop Loving You", a number one on both sides of the Atlantic; "Your Cheatin' Heart", "You Are My Sunshine", "You Don't Know Me", and "Take These Chains From My Heart".

The genius of Ray Charles was to combine not two but four genres in his interpretations of twenty four country classics: the lush strings of easy listening, big band brass, the definitive voice of soul and the beautiful simplicity of country music.

To match that, the albums would expose Ray Charles to a wider audience than had previously existed and, at the same time, introduce another audience to country and western music.

Listening to these albums now, (re-mastered and with six bonus tracks), it is not difficult to imagine the shattering effect that they had on the world of popular music, more than half a century ago, as black and white America met in a glorious, unforgettable musical fusion.

An essential, historical benchmark.

Against all advice Ray Charles pressed ahead with this project when many people close to him felt it was doomed to failure. The result was one of his greatest albums. The emotion that Ray manages to put into songs like, 'You Don't Know Me' and 'I Can't Stop Loving You' move me to tears when I hear them. OK, some of the arrangements sound a little dated now, but when 'The Genius' starts to sing you get so lost in the music, none of that seems to matter. Buy it, you won't regret it!

AS you may realise from the title - I am an avid Ray Charles fan, I like him best in his Country/Ballad -y moods, rather than his Rock. However, the sound in this album is not so 'refined', and it does feel a little as if it has been dragged up from somewhere after a long while, however - I rather like that as it gives a nostalgic tone to it.

I love it!

Ray Charles
Modern Sounds In Country & western Music, Volumes 1 & 2
NOT2CD539

The running times for the CDs are as follows...CD1 46.39 & CD2 41.49. The cover art is very attractive with small images of the original LPs. The back of the liner booklet has an iconic black and white image of Ray Charles. The liner notes are by Not Now Music regular, Michael Heatley. Great value for such good sound quality recordings. I will probably say this again...

This set presents the full original LPs over two CDs and with the addition of 3 bonus tracks on each CD providing a total track count of 30.

Inside the CD box on the liner are 4 small black & white images of Ray Charles. The major attraction with this new set is the availability of both iconic LPs with bonus tracks that present the other side of Ray Charles making a valid comparison of the delivery on both Modern Sounds LPs. Add to this the excellent sound transfers and the incredibly reasonable selling price.

"Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music" was originally released in April 1962 on the ABC-Paramount Records label. The production was handled entirely by Ray Charles and the well established arranger & conductor Sid Feller. A new area of performance for Ray Charles the LP features country, folk, and western music standards delivered in rhythm and blues, pop, and jazz styles. The LP was both a critical and commercial success bringing Ray Charles more into mainstream music. The LP also had 4 charting singles with its main single, "I Can't Stop Loving You" and the LP being awarded a gold record. The LP was deemed by many to be Ray Charles best studio album.
