Ever looked out of a train window and wondered what those strange little signs at the trackside saying things like "AWS" and "Cant" actually mean? What's the difference between a Mark 2 and a Mark 3 carriage? Why can leaves on the line be so much of a problem?? Well it's all here - and more!

Beginning with two sections explaining in laymans' terms the way in which the system is organised and run, explaining the relationships between Network Rail and the train franchisees and the rolling stock companies (ROSCOS). It also outlines the regulatory structure under which the network operates. There is no editorial line on the rights and wrongs of railway privatisation - just how things currently are. The rest of the book is an engrossing A-Z of all things on the British railway.

The book is well illustrated with tons of pictures from the British Rail archive, and of course from the present-day privatised era in a mixture of colour and black and white.

Although it is a minefield of useless information if you just have a trivial, schoolboy interest in trains that you can bore all your friends with - it's an invaluble resource for someone starting out in the British railway industry just wanting to get to grips with the industry "language" - some of which is universal across the world - some of it has evolved with Britain's system.

So next time you are stuck on a freezing cold platform in winter wondering why the 0730 into town hasn't turned up because of the wrong type of snow.....you might just find the answer here!

A very well produced book by a well respected name in the genre. Just as the title suggests it is an alphabetical list of terms used in the modern railway, which is extremely useful as acronyms crop up in railway books where sometimes there is no accompanying glossary. As well as being a dictionary brief legal terms regarding railways are laid out plus regulations and an explanation of the organisations involved in the industry. Altogether a very useful book. Highly recommended.
