Book Description

1 Oct 2008 041544215X 978-0415442152 3

Today psychometrics plays an increasingly important role in all our lives as testing and assessment occurs from preschool until retirement. This book introduces the reader to the subject in all its aspects, ranging from its early history, school examinations, how to construct your own test, controversies about IQ and recent developments in testing on the internet.

In Part one of Modern Psychometrics, Rust and Golombok outline the history of the field and discuss central theoretical issues such as IQ, personality and integrity testing and the impact of computer technology and the internet. In Part two a practical step-by-step guide to the development of a psychometric test is provided. This will enable anyone wishing to develop their own test to plan, design, construct and validate it to a professional standard. This third edition has been extensively updated and expanded to take into account recent developments in the field, making it the ideal companion for those studying for the British Psychological Society’s Certificates of Competence in Testing.

Modern Psychometrics combines an up to date scientific approach to the subject with a full consideration of the political and ethical issues involved in the large scale implementation of psychometrics testing in today’s highly networked society, particularly in terms of issues of diversity and internationalism. It will be useful to students and practictioners at all levels who are interested in psychometrics.

Review

"Without assuming any prior knowledge of mathematics, nor of  psychology, Modern Psychometrics 3rd Edition outlines the major issues in psychometrics and places them into context by reviewing past and current developments in intelligence research and personality theory.  This will be an extraordinarily easy book to read for anyone who is interested in learning what psychometrics is about." Alberto Maydeu-Oliveras, University of Barcelona

"This text covers moral and ethical issues in psychometrics extensively. It is very readable and has extensive coverage of some topics that are only briefly mentioned in other texts."Lauri Nummenmaa, University of Tampere

"A book that, contrary to all expectations, makes psychometrics readable and interesting. Special virtues include showing that statistical rigor cannot be detached from people's perceptions and that controversies, such as criterion versus norm based assessment or measuring traits versus the capacity to perform a role, dissolve when one designs a good test." - Professor James R. Flynn, author of What Is Intelligence?

5.0 out of 5 stars Anticipated Best Resource 26 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
From available records, I trust that this product would be the best resource for postgraduate students and emerging professionals like me. However, am yet to receive it so as to really confirm that believe. I don't know why I can't receive my order almost 3 weeks beyond the original date of delivery estimate. I expected taking delivery on 7th August 2012 but upto today (8/26/2012) it is no where to be found. I pray that my anticipated best resource can arrive soon so that I will be in the best position to effectively review same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hands on introduction to psychometrics 26 April 2009
By Litsios James - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
We have all filled out a personality test in a magazin. But what is the basis for these tests and how are they made? This book will answer these questions and more, covering the basic concept of ability, aptitude and achievement testing as well as person-based tests of personality, integrity and clinical symptoms, mood and attitiude. The book also shows you step by step how to build good and robust questionaires.

I can see this book supporting a course but it is also a book that make a good weekend read of introduction to the subject.
