5.0 out of 5 stars Not For The Inexperienced Joiner.Restoration Carpenters ONLY, 20 May 2003

the type of work that this book records is of a superior class of work and would no longer be seen in any but the very highest quality properties today. unfortunately with todays Bob the builder budgets & Architects who dont have a clue about construction this book is resigned to the reference shelf in a quality carpenters workshop solely for reference.

1.0 out of 5 stars what not to buy when building stairs, 17 Dec 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Modern Practical Stairbuilding and Handrailing: For the Use of Workmen (Paperback)
The title suggests a Modern Practical Stairbuilding for use of workmen. In computer terms this book is not user friendly the designs are not modern and the illustrations are not clear and are very small. This book is out of a museum and should be returned there.
I also purchased 'Constructing Staircases,Balustrades & Landings', which is totally different & I would give it five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Kidding, 3 Dec 2003

Of course "Modern is only relative", and I don't know what else anyone should expect from a circa 1932 reprinted book. As if that shouldn't be enough, the editors include a new warning about safety and code compliance. If you want to build modern, I suppose you could buy one of those 'do it yourself' sunset books at the checkstand at home depot. If you would like to see how things were done in the days when cheap, shoddy and uninspired WASN'T the order of the day, this (for stairs anyway) may be your book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Modern is relative, 26 Dec 2001
By Bruce Abernathy "Stairman" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Modern Practical Stairbuilding and Handrailing: For the Use of Workmen (Paperback)
I build Stairs and balustrades and this book has only theoretical application. It was modern when written in 1902. Stairs have changed a lot in construction techniques since 1902...Modern is only relative.
