the type of work that this book records is of a superior class of work and would no longer be seen in any but the very highest quality properties today. unfortunately with todays Bob the builder budgets & Architects who dont have a clue about construction this book is resigned to the reference shelf in a quality carpenters workshop solely for reference.

1.0 out of 5 stars what not to buy when building stairs 17 Dec 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The title suggests a Modern Practical Stairbuilding for use of workmen. In computer terms this book is not user friendly the designs are not modern and the illustrations are not clear and are very small. This book is out of a museum and should be returned there.
I also purchased 'Constructing Staircases,Balustrades & Landings', which is totally different & I would give it five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern Practical Stairbuilding and Handrailing 27 April 2012
By JN
Format:Paperback
A must for all master craftsmen involved in the restoration of period and historic houses with fine staircases, this book delves into the lost art of handrailing showing the geometry involved in producing such high class joinery. More of a nostalgic reference book nowadays for craftsmen who have a passion for high class work and how it used to be done. Its a shame colleges do not teach this aspect of the trade to apprentices anymore before its lost forever !!

5.0 out of 5 stars For advanced joiners and carpenters only 15 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a book by the master joiner George Elis. The book is not intended for people who are trying to make there own staircase. it is for joiners and carpenters who allready have extensive knowlesge and skills in staircase building and want to increas there skills to be able to manufacture some of the most complex staircases possible to the highist standards possible.
For me as a joiner that has been making staircases for many years i found the book very fascinating and learnt alot from it, especially how to make geometrical curved staircases using traditional methords.
