About the Author

Anissa Helou is a distinguished food writer, journalist and broadcaster, specialising in Middle Eastern, Moroccan and Mediterranean food. She is a frequent guest on radio programmes and has also appeared on television in her own series Hello Helou. She writes regularly for the Weekend Financial Times and contributes to many other publications, including Waitrose Food Illustrated, Gourmet Magazine and Square Meal. Anissa has written a number of very successful cookbooks including Lebanese Cuisine, Street Cafe Morocco, Mediterranean Street Food and The Fifth Quarter, an Offal Cookbook, which received several culinary awards. This is her first illustrated book.

I have to say I do not agree with other reviews about this recipe book. Many of the listings are not really recipes at all - just the combination of one or two ingredients. It is difficult to find much originality here, or moments of "oh i wondered how they made that", or "now that does sound delicious". Yes I understand mezze are simple tapas like dishes but I was expecting more inspiration than this: cucumber salad; carrot salad; feta cheese salad :(

Other than that the book is nicely presented, but content is king I'm afraid.

Helou's book is a great introduction to Mediterranean cooking. Her flavours are clean and fresh, and her recipes easy to follow. She provides enough information about unusual ingredients to ensure that you can find them in local shops where things may not be labelled in English, but almost all of her recipes can come straight from the supermarket.

She is enthusiastic and knowledgeable, without ever lecturing, which is great.

A friend gave me this recipe book and I am so impressed with it I have bought several copies for friends for Christmas. It includes a broad selection of Mezze, it is well written and comprehensive and it is a lovely book to read - lots of excellent photos and interesting information. I highly recommend it.

I have had this book for a couple of weeks now and have tried several of the recipes with success. None were overly demanding and even the picky teens ate them all up. Moroccan stuffed tomatoes and the spiced potatoes are favourites already. The recipe format is clear and there are plenty of photographs to help you know how things should look if you are not familiar with this cuisine. There are detailed explanations about ingredients and where to find them. My only criticism is that the list of reccommended suppliers is limited to the south. Though anyone with half a brain would know where to look to find them elsewhere. I am enjoying choosing different recipes and would reccommend this book to anyone who would like a change to their meal time format from the English standard.
