This textbook is highly recommended to anyone who wants to be able to read music for guitar. The textbook has hundreds of exercises for reading music, all of which is original material. The music becomes increasingly challanging and interesting to play; this book would completement guitar tuition, but could be used to develop basic skills alone. It's by far the best 'reading' textbook I have come across, and best jazz orientated book on the market. In a way, its not trying to force and style or correct way of playing. It provides information, a map, if you like. If you are stuck with your guitar 'method', where perhaps, you have fluidity in playing notes and chords, but cannot seem to develop tone & melody and rythm amongst other things, with this book you will find a mountain of work that will improve your're ability no end.

The best i have come across - and i have looked at a lot of books and courses. Worth getting the DVD as well. The most straightforward and comprehensive course based on reading music....definitely start here!

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Students need a Teacher 3 Feb 2004
By C. R. Downing TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is one of the classic book sets on learning to play thoroughly. And yes as another reviewer observes you probably need a teacher to set you on the right road. (As I'm a guitar teacher I guess I would say that wouldn't I?) But this book raises some serious points about learning - do you want to just riff out on your favourites or do you really want to learn what this instrument can do. If you want to learn in depth this is one of the book series that will help - but you may need a teacher to sort out the why's and what's and how's that are not covered in the text. If you want something more simple try the Hal Leonard Guitar Method series or their Fast Track series.

Of its type this rates a 5 because its been out there for a long time and it's a course book from Berklee guitar courses which means its tried and tested over years. It's also often discussed by jazz players in forums as a way forward for learning jazz - although not a jazz book itself it represents some of the best material available to form a good foundation.
