I have used this series myself, and on and off with my students over the years. I recommend it very highly.
However, it is not really for your average rock or metal guitarist. It is aimed at the aspiring professional working musician who would want to work in a theatre pit, a dance band, a jazz ensemble, a TV/film orchestra or as part of a band backing touring singers/musicians. It will help you to learn to read fluently, and for most gigs, if you can't read you don't get the gig. You will learn essential scales, chords, progressions and arpeggios in all keys and positions. It covers the most common rhythmic patterns. If it has any weaknesses, it relies too much on common time, though other time signatures appear sporadically, and although some more challenging rhythms are introduced, you will need to do much more work on this aspect (Louis Bellson's books are great for this.)
That said, this series does what it sets out to do thoroughly. I don't know of a better plectrum guitar tuition package.

The book and CD are ok..but is not for a self study, unless you have a middle knowledge of music notation reading practice.Better is a TEACHER'S manual to guitar reading practice for students.

This book & CD combination is a must for all guitar students. It is of great value when you compare the cost of this compared to private lessons. You could teach yourself with this book & the CD makes this possible. But having said that, this book would also be of great use for guitar lessons. The CD has all of the music of all the pieces to be learned - this is not the case with some other book/CD combinations.
