Following the commercial success of Manne's album of "My Fair Lady" songs, the trio, (described as "his Friends") of Andre Previn, Leroy Vinnegar and Manne, made several others to the same formula. "Li'l Abner" was the next in the series but the songs (composed by Gene DePaul) are less memorable than Lowe's, and although the performances are excellent their impact is reduced. Later the trio, sometimes described as "Andre Previn and his Pals, and sometimes with Red Mitchell instead of Vinnegar, produced albums of music from Pal Joey, Gigi, The Bells are Ringing, & West Side Story, and these can best be described as early examples of "dinner jazz". Previn is a wonderfully inventive jazz improviser, but the songs are often not appropriate for jazz.
