4.0 out of 5 stars Good but incomplete, 26 Feb 2004
By A Customer
Dr Waswo's book deals with several subjects in great depth, is extremely readable, and is a neat summary of the issues surrounding this period of Japanese history. Nonetheless, unsurprisingly perhaps given its focus on social issues, there are gaping holes in the subject list: there is no chapter on the Occupation, little on imperialism, and a skethcy account of the road to war pre-1941. I would therefore describe it as a good introdution to the subject, but less use as a comprehensive guide.
