Book Description

20 Oct 2011
This title focuses on game changers. This is the blow-by-blow account of the works that matter most in Modern art. The story of modern art begins roughly 150 years ago, when painters left their studios to try and catch nature and the quickly changing light out in plain air, only to find that they did not paint more realistically, instead they were pushed toward the fractured colors and fleeting compositions we've come to associate with the term impressionism. Once standard academy practice had been overcome, there was no holding back, and in a constant desire to pursue new roads, one style supplanted the next, always bringing different innovations: after impressionism, there followed symbolism, expressionism, futurism, surrealism, dada, abstract art, minimal, and pop. Even in post-modernism and the contemporary works of Koons, Kelley, or Wool, this modernist urge to make something new is still very much alive. This publication concentrates on individual works, each piece breaking some amount of new ground, and with 300 featured pieces by as many artists, this means an average of two game changers for every year. Each work is accompanied by a text that places it within the larger narrative, introducing the artist and outlining the agenda. Introductions to all the important art movements give the reader a more thorough grounding in the historical developments, but most of all, it is the year-by-year succession of groundbreaking works, both classics and surprising rediscoveries, that tells the story of an art that always thrived on innovation.

How does Taschen produce books of this quality at this price? Most other art books of this size and quality weigh in at 50 - 60 pounds and this collection has TWO volumes for the grand sum of around 25 making this incredible value.

My main reason for buying was to expand my understanding of the various movements in modern art and this 2 volume set does a wonderful job of outlining the environments that brought about movements such as impressionism, expressionism and surrealism (etc etc) whilst relating it all back to the key practitioners and key works of art.

The movements covered include:

1. Impressionism
2. Symbolism
3. Cubism
4. Expressionism
5. Futurism
6. Abstract art
7. Dadaism
8. Realism
9 Surrealism
10. Abstract expressionism
11. Pop art
12. Minimal art
13. Conceptual art
14. Post modernism

Some sections are larger than others but all are prefaced by an essay giving a good overview of the movement before delving into particular artist's and their selected works. The only negative point is that the introductory Essay to Post modernism is very short - half a page. All the others run to multiple pages anywhere between 8 - 15. I know quality is more important than quantity but for such a vast area of art half a page seems frankly neglectful. The artists sections have generally a page of text with one or two smaller examples of their work on the left with the right hand page being a large print of one of their works or a collection outlining their work. Some artist's are visited more than once in the same section. The book has a nice flow and it's easy to get a flavor of the artist's style and their contribution to the movement from just a quick glance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as Good as I had Hoped, Nor As Bad as I had Feared 17 Dec 2012

Sometimes informative, sometime obvious text with mostly okay to poor quality reproductions not particularly well chosen
and over-used in most cases, this could serve as a basic and broad introduction for those ignorant about Modern Art. The
price is low and if your expectations are as well, it has it's place as a mass audience pleasure.
