Product Description

Product Description

Modern House 2 is a survey of the world's most interesting and innovative contemporary houses. Organised into thematic sections, it examines approximately 30 houses from around the world. Architects include, amongst others: Glenn Murcutt, Rem Koolhaas/OMA, Foster and Partners, Herzog and de Meuron, Williams and Tsien, Gunther Behnisch, Kazuyo Sejima, Marcos Acayaba and Gabriel Poole. Following Phaidon's Modern House (published 1993), Modern House 2 is a survey of the world's most interesting and innovative contemporary houses. Organised thematically, Modern House 2 will examine around 30 houses focusing on contemporary issues, such as ecological concerns, changing patterns of living, building with sensitivity in ever-increasingly populated cities, and respecting the environment when building in isolated rural areas. Modern House 2 comprises an introductory essay and five chapters, including a final chapter examining concept houses which will focus on international competition designs or commissions for 'model houses'. The book thus ends with an examination of varying international concerns, and offers a view into future possibilities for domestic architecture. An impressive international presentation of houses - from USA, Canada and South America, Europe, Middle East, Japan, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand - Modern House 2 also responds to an increasing level of knowledge and sophistication about design and environmental issues on the part of the general public, as well as a growing awareness of non-Western ways of life and models of dwelling. Furthermore, through a presentation of exemplary houses, it provides a way for general readers, as well as designers, to think about their own living environments and how they might wish to shape them. Modern House 2 reveals that striking and innovative design can be achieved within the framework of concerns about everyday living patterns that affect everybody.

The beauifully designed cover of this outstanding book mirrors the gorgeous and challenging architecture contained within it. This book is a must for anyone thinking of redesigning the exterior, or interior, of their house on both a small or large scale, be it modern or otherwise. The designs are truely inspirational to both the amateur and professional alike. Text-wise, the writing is informative without being too 'architectural', making it accessible for all who have any interest in modern design, and contemporary living.

I would highly recommend this book.

There are a huge number of books of nice looking modern houses and interiors. This is actually a really good one.

It features around thirty architect designed houses from around the world. The houses have apparently mainly already appeared in the architectural press. The houses represent a diverse and international selection, all are well photographed. There are some sketches and plans, with each house having a few pages devoted to it. The houses have also been grouped into broad themes, with each theme being thoughtfully introduced. Although the book was published in 2004, it still holds up well as a thoughtful analysis of how we live and might live. I particularly liked the Rem Koolhaas house for someone new to a wheelchair, the crescent shaped house that was in Grand Designs and the cliff top house like a lens in the landscape,

It is very slightly over-designed, with some text at right angles and captions in a faint gray font that was hard to read. Although the book is a paperback, it comes with a firm slipcover, remove the slipcover and the book has a plain white cover with the title on the spine.

The final section features some unbuilt projects, but otherwise it is stunning photos and insightful text all the way. The fact that the author was an anthropologist adds an interesting spin to the text, she is clearly more interested in people than architectural theory, which is most welcome.

Phaidon books are always really well produced, this is a hefty book, good quality paper stock, nice design, no typos, good text, expensive but worth it.

worthy successor to the first book 9 Oct 2001
By Ping Lim - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book appropriately divides into 5 categories: environmental awareness, changing patterns of living, urban interaction, the rural retreat, concept houses of the future. With that, we are bombarded with ideas, many of them innovative ideas that are willing to be embraced by the architects' clients & in some instances, by the architects themselves. Some houses here blend in with their surroundings, & some stand out from the crowd, some that look & work more like a machine, some that facilitate the lifestyle of the occupants, some are meant to be poetic, & so forth, but overall, they all convey the thinkings & the personalities of the people who are willing to embrace the ideas behind the buildings. As St. Patrick of Assisi said before that stones don't build a city, but people do, & ultimately, the erection of spectacular buildings conveyed in this book is all done to serve the people, which in turn are fabricated into a bigger urban picture of where they are living in. Highly enjoyable to read & browse thru, & a well presented coffee book it is. We don't expect a lesser quality book from Phaidon, to put it simply. The book is finished by relevant chapters such as credits, further reading, index, & acknowledgments. One downside of this book, however is the usage of works of architects already covered in the first offering such as Thom Craig of Christchurch, Mathias Klotz of Chile, & others that I wouldn't remember. Then, there is the usage of small grey fonts over the white background, & in many instances, the statements are simply too vague to read.
