This is just an overview with some select close readings of a few specific gardens around the world, however, the writing is not particularly good. It ranges from sweeping generalities to technical details, often in the same sentence. Rarely does it offer clear explanations of the real issues and theories at stake. I would recommend it for library use or basic reference, although the book should only be relied on for direct facts, brief introductions to key people and issues, and a rough schematic of modern garden history. If you are interested in a really compelling analysis of major issues in garden design in the 20th century, you'll probably want to look elsewhere or read further in other works. Nonetheless, it is informative and very well illustrated.
