4.0 out of 5 stars Best of a poor bunch, 1 May 2008
This review is from: The Modern Gaelic-English Dictionary (Gairm (Series), Leabhar 108.) (Paperback)
There are surprisingly few good Gaelic dictionaries aimed at the beginner. This is the best for me because it is pocket-sized and has imitated pronunctiation throughout. I also have the Teach Yourself dictionary but this is much more useful. That said, there are loads of very common words and definitions missing for example the Gaelic equivalents of hospital, garage, stormy, page. Should have been checked against the standard vocabulary for beginners courses...

4.0 out of 5 stars up-to-date but not comprehensive, 28 Aug 2000
By Jason P. Sorens "Political Scientist" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Modern Gaelic-English Dictionary (Gairm (Series), Leabhar 108.) (Paperback)
This dictionary is strong where Dwelly's is weak and weak where Dwelly's is strong. It is, as far as I know, the only Gaelic-English dictionary that uses the new orthography for Gaelic. However, it is fairly slim and thus not comprehensive. However, I should think that this has everything that a beginning or intermediate learner of Gaelic would ever need. Combined with Thomson's English-Gaelic dictionary the learner will be quite well supplied with up-to-date Gaelic references.

5.0 out of 5 stars very useful Gaelic Dictionary, 9 April 2002
By Deborah MacGillivray "Author," - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Modern Gaelic-English Dictionary (Gairm (Series), Leabhar 108.) (Paperback)
Since this is only Gaelic to English, its not for a complete newbie. You need a little working knowledge of the language, it is also not a complete version, rather a thin, handy size. I found many words in it not in others such and MacLennans.

I think is super companion piece.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, 30 Sep 2005
By Carole - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Modern Gaelic-English Dictionary (Gairm (Series), Leabhar 108.) (Paperback)
This dictionary would be much better if it also included English to Gaelic. However, it is good for beginners since pronunciation is included. It also includes verb tables, and lists of first and last names, along with names of places.

The thing I do have a problem with is Amazon's price for this book. It is marked 7.50 GBP, which at today's rate converts to approx $13.50 in US dollars. Now I realize that importing books makes them a little more expensive but this is over 100% more than one would pay. It would have been cheaper for me to order it in the UK and have it shipped since it's a light weight book and shipping would certainly have been more economical than paying Amazon's price. Next time I will be more careful and urge anyone looking for this book to do the same.
