The third volume in Ace Records' highly acclaimed series on the Modern Records downhome blues sessions, this time from 1951-1955 (see also CDCHD 876 & CDCHD 982). This release homes in on the Memphis recordings by the great Sam Phillips prior to the launch of his Sun label. It continues with Joe Biharis trip down to Helena, Arkansas in search of Sonny Boy Williamson, and ends with the fabled Dixie Blues Boys session in Los Angeles. Highlights include the stomping tracks by Willie Nix and the classy contributions by Joe Hill Louis, Bobby Bland (with Junior Parker on harmonica) and Howling Wolf (with different versions to his recent CD). As before, Jim ONeal (the co-founder of Living Blues magazine) has written the amazingly detailed note based on much original research. The compilation, with seven previously unissued tracks and much else from obscure releases, is by the veteran team of John Broven and Dave Sax. With terrific mastering, this series is developing into a must-have for all blues fans and lovers of genuine Americana music alike.
