This series of books is a great choice for students of Chinese. I am glad that I found these books. They are easy to understand and well written. Wish they were available when I started to learn Chinese. It would have saved me lots of work. I had a quick look at the contents of this series and I am working with book 1 and 2 at the moment. They are very helpful in explaining the structure of the language. I will study the useful daily life topics in the other 2 books soon.

I tried a fair number of other books, and these are the most useful ones I have found. Overall, I highly recommend the books.

What is particularly good is that the material is presented in its pinyin/Romanised form, Chinese character form, English translation and its straight literal meaning in English - which is great for getting to grips with the Chinese grammatical structure quickly. This is done across all of the books in the series so it’s easy to jump between books once familiarity is gained with the grammar and pronunciation - unlike books for other languages that I've tried to learn in the past.

I bought the rest of the series after receiving the first book. The first book covers the essentials required for the rest of the series. I think it would have benefited from accompanying audio for the first book, but I found lots of resources online for the basic tones. The author highlights the differences between Western and Chinese systems for things such as number systems and other grammatical constructs in a clear manner.

The material seems to be presented for everyday real life use rather than a typical travel phrasebook manner so this would be suitable for those wanting to learn the language rather than just learn a few phrases for holiday travel – there’s a small section on getting a haircut! The last book also gives insights into Chinese culture and customs.

The series is concisely written and presented in a no-nonsense approach. Good value for money for the whole series.

The books are of great help. I think learning a foreign language has much to do with exercises and repeatings. As I do not like those boring grammar drills using silly artificial sentences which are almost standard in many Chinese courses, I was very much delighted to find "Modern Chinese". Those four volumes offer practical, modern Chinese as sample sentences illustrating grammatical peculiarities in an easy to digest way. And with the greatest of ease the learner gets accustomed to hanzi, simply by the word for word translations, if necessary. It 's no drill, it's simply fun to read, to explore, and to delve deeper into the language. It is a very good approach for people who like to learn the language "the natural way". - And you find modern expressions which are still missing in dictionaries. Very practical indeed for ambitious people who want to get "easy" and comparatively "relaxed" access to Mandarin and improve it on the fast track. Even advanced learners will profit from the many examples offered.

I was always wondering why those linguists and teachers never had the idea to introduce a foreign language through simple sentences. The human brain always learns the grammar rules with simple example sentences.

The author of Modern Chinese series of books creates this "natural" approach. These books offer relaxed learning and the idea of "lit." is really unique.

Very much recommended to any person willing to learn Mandarin Chinese...

The Modern Chinese books provide a very good method for learning Chinese.
This book teaches verbs and tenses, common verbs usages, adverbs and their usages, common words and phrases, etc. It also briefly teaches how to write Chinese characters.
Highly recommended.

Book 1 of this series gave me an excellent foundation in the basics of the Chinese language and enabled me to grow into Book 2. I very much like that there is ample space on each topic to make notes. I have been practicing writing the Hanzi characters in the book next to the lessons. I find that writing helps me to retain the lesson. I especially like the "lit" or literal translations which are helping me to learn the difference between Chinese and English sentence structure. I try to practice each day and find myself improving with every page I turn.
