Modern fiction?,

I am always confused when I read the word "modern". What does it mean? Is it "modern" as in "modernism" as opposed to Postmodernism? Well, I am mainly interested in "Lad lit", and this lit is quite the opposite of "modernism". Modern here means today's literature, or today's fiction. But is it Literature?? Some say: NO, it is not!
