Product Description

As the editor of London's revolutionary New Worlds magazine in the swinging sixties, Michael Moorcock has been credited with virtually inventing modern science fiction, publishing authors including Norman Spinrad, Samuel R. Delaney, Brian Aldiss and J.G. Ballard. Now, Moorcock's most audacious creation, Jerry Cornelius - assassin, rock star, chronospy and maybe-Messiah - is back in Modem Times 2.0, a time-twisting odyssey that connects 1960s London with Obama's America, making stops in Palm Springs and Guantanamo.

"Outspoken Author" Michael Moorcock 4 April 2011
By Paul Brooks - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
"Modem Times 2.0" is the fifth book in the series "Outspoken Authors" published by PM Press. Each book features a mixture of fictional work, interviews, essays and bibliography. In addition to Michael Moorcock the other authors in the series are Terry Bisson, Kim Stanley Robinson, Eleanor Arnason, Gary Phillips and Ursula Le Guin.
"Modem Times 2.0" features a reprinted novella, an essay from the London Times, an interview and a bibliography.

Over the years I have read a number of Moorcock's books starting with the unauthorized Lancer "Elric" paperbacks in the mid 60's. I purchased this book primarily for the interview and the bibliography and was not disappointed. Curious readers of speculative fiction not acquainted with the authors featured may find this volume and the others of interest. I suspect the market for these volumes will be readers already familiar with the writers body of works.

I was pleasantly surprised to find this book in the Barnes and Nobel bookstore here in New Hampshire. Glad to see small press books receiving shelf space in the mega bookstores.

unreadable 29 Jun 2011
By G. DeRome - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
While I am a big fan of the Pyat novels, I found Modem Times 2.0 to be unreadable. It's only 79 pages, but I gave up half-way through. It is an installment in the Jerry Cornelius stories which I haven't read. But I don't think that's the problem. The novella jumps around from time-space to time-space in short 1/2 or 1-page chapters. You never know where or when you are (Cornelius is a time-traveler) or who any of the characters are. I find it very prententious and self-indulgent. I assume the author knows where Cornelius is at any given point, but he hasn't clued the rest of us in on it. Never figured out the point of the whole exercise. Maybe the author is just bored with writing linear, readable stories.

The book also contains an 8-page reminiscence on the London the author grew up in; enjoyable, and a 26-page interview with the author which is informative and enjoyable.

Be forewarned.
