5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 24 Sep 2006
By Frances Ross "Frances Ross" (Scotland) - See all my reviews

This is the most amazing and wonderful book. I am a Doctor and also a sculptor and I model figures in clay. I am completely amazed at the brilliance of Lucchesi and what he does in this book. He starts from the inside of the body making the skeleton and works outwards with anatomical accuracy. Then at the end as if by magic his figures come alive. I think that every student at medical school and every student learning to either draw or model the human figure should not only read this but should do what he does in the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected, 10 Jul 2008
By Sadie (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
Having had this item on my wish list for quite some time, I was extremely enthusiastic to open the package and start reading as soon as possible but alas, the excitement was a short experience.

I was looking to try out a new angle with scuplting the human figure and found that this book was no use to me at all. I have no experience of sculpting the human figure and I was hoping to be given guidance, as in step by step instructions on how the human body is built up using clay. I found that the pictures with short descriptions of what was being done were not going to help me at all to learn a new modelling skill.

Whilst I am in awe of the artists work, being a polymer clay artist myself, in all fairness, I think this book would be excellent for those who already have experience with the human anatomy and want to try sculpting the human body but for someone wanting to be the proud owner of a masterpiece such as those in the book, without any experience, they may be a tad dissapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fall in love with sculpture, 5 Jul 2006
By J. Ward "theillustriousjay" (Brecon Wales UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Lucchesi is an Italian who sculpted in the USA and both influences are detectable in his amazingly beautiful work... the Italian Renaissance provides the method of working first on the detailed underlying bone structure of the body, then adding the flesh and skin tissue in sheets of clay, little by little, before creating the final delicate surface effects. His work is realistic and not abstract, and in that he worked against the fashions of his time, bravo! The American influence is subtle and present in his style and choice of subject, both provocative and human. Profuse stunning photographs show the clay sculpture evolving minute step by step. Reaching the climax... you realize that you have been in the presence of a great technical master, and the final astonishing photos... echos of greek Apelles... the sculpture comes to life, and love. A truly great book.

3.0 out of 5 stars more biology than sculpture
I have studied art for a while, and have dabbled in sculpture many a time. I have only recently got into figure sculpting, and thought this book would be useful to me as I loved... Read more
