"Shirley teaches in a practical and fun way how to ditch the dinosaur clichés that have no place in modern business writing. There is never a dull moment in her workshops. She has done the same with the 7th edition of her best-selling book Model Business Letters. It's a must-have for everyone who wants to write clear and persuasive business documents."

Alex Tan, HR Manager, Singapore

"With our communication today becoming more and more faceless, our writing is more important than ever. Shirley's emphasis on building relationships through effective writing is really essential. In this 7th edition of her popular book, Shirley has given us a practical reference guide providing all the guidance we need as well as samples we can adapt. The new sections on email, social media and online writing are really useful too."

Stephen Choo, PhD, Director and Regional Head of Insight, ASEAN, Hay Group

"In her workshops, Shirley has such a friendly and interactive approach that makes everyone feel comfortable. She has done the same in the 7th edition of her popular book, writing in a simple, clear way and giving practical examples."

Carmelia Ng, Organisation Development Manager, Fuji Xerox Singapore

5.0 out of 5 stars a very useful reference book 21 May 2014
By Nigel P
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I continue to use and recommend this book when training people about business correspondence. I find it is especially useful when wanting to show how the use of punctuation in business English has been reduced, despite old ways still being taught and continued in some places across the world. I wish that more business people in the UK and overseas could have a copy of this book on their shelves. The 7th edition is more than a slight change from the 6th edition (I have both copies), which is not surprising given that the main medium of business writing has changed in recent years. I find it very refreshing that the author is now based in Singapore, one of the great business hubs of the world making extensive use of English as an international language.

2.0 out of 5 stars Why this Edition 9 April 2013
By Baffled
I deliberately ordered the 6th edition which I prefer but for some strange reason I was sent the 7th edition which I did not want (and is a pound cheaper!). The 7th edition is too modern for my liking....I will be returning it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 2 Feb 2013
By vangie
When I barrowed this book from my library I thought its the best guide on how to write business letter and the way she approached plain and direct. So, I decided that I should purchase for my own reference. When I received my order I was a bit surprised as I am not fully aware of the seventh edition. Amazon don't state onto their website that seventh editon is what I received. I would prefer the old version rather than this new edition.

In my opinion it's not the same to previous version she published its like a cut off version to the original book.DISAPPOINTING!!!!! and I would like to return it, its not worth having and not that cheap!

1.0 out of 5 stars Dumbs down power of words 7 Jun 2013
Despite the two previous underwhelmed customers and their reviews I bought the 7th edition but was utterly disappointed. The author now lives in Singapore which may partle explain why the writing style she recommends would be more suited to an international audience whose first language is not English. She deliberately waters down what I feel are moderate and modest use of English into very basic set of words. The English language is a relatively new language therefore it affords its depth of meaning with a large imported vocabulary. As a UK businessman with clients in the UK I think my letters would sound very unprofessional if I was to follow the book's guidance. They would sound too much like junk mail, lack any distinct flavour and to be frank lose their integrity. I did however find the advice on the structure of each piece useful, although the same points were repeated too often. Sadly I will be returning this book

5.0 out of 5 stars A great reference guide. 28 Aug 2012
By Andrew Bryant - Published on Amazon.com
This book brings business writing into the 21st century. We all receive and write countless letters and emails every day and this book lets you know how to be clear and concise - which is something that is often absent. I would recommend a copy as a reference for every office and a must read for new staff.
