Whoa! An exciting and complicated trilogy! (spoilers contained within)

Echoing what other reviewers have stated; the 3rd book is definitely the worst of the trilogy, and the trilogy started to go downhill during the 2nd book.
I originally started reading it after watching the film at the cinema, I didn't really understand it very well so bought the trilogy, in the first 10 pages I completely understood it. I couldn't put the books down and that is unusual for me! Although the 2nd and 3rd books are still captivating and engaging, they just become unnecessarily complicated. The introduction to the myriad of characters and new story lines in book 2 just overwhelmed the original story.
However, Collins enjoys keeping readers in suspense, twists, turns and shocks appear to be her caliber. I wanted to keep reading just to see what would happen next and it became harder and harder to predict. I agree that Katniss's complicated love triangle and feelings, plus her fluctuating feelings are also difficult to comprehend, and make her a character you can't really relate to. However, Collins is portraying a shell shocked individual, having difficulty coping with her circumstances, so her being emotionless is just a reaction to the chain of disastrous events. She was realising that no matter what she did she couldn't win and she lost what she stood for. Much like her own mother after her dad died.
The positive thing about the book is that Peeta managed to partially mend Katniss, and made her realise she could still live after everything that happened. It may be a horrible story but the trilogy was meant to be brutal. As for Gale, for the first time in his life, Gale had more of a motive in his life than to just look after his family and the people closest too him. In book 3 of this trilogy, 17 year old Katniss is again neck deep in trouble, danger, political intrigue and an ever increasingly public love triangle. She is also the figurehead of a rebellion as the 13 districts revolt against the powerful Capitol and a key figure in rallying support.
Katniss is vulnerable but strong when needed, reckless when facing danger but overly protective where her family is concerned. She again proves herself to be the ultimate survivor, but she also remains a realistic character by making rash decisions which are sometimes not necessarily the right choice. Aware of her circumstances, the reader can fully understand her reasoning even if some of Katniss' decisions may be wrong. The story line wows throughout and is particularly poignant in places, as several personal tragedies affect Katniss and those she is emotionally involved with. Fast paced and imaginative with a truly memorable heroine, "Mockingjay" is a fitting finale to an enthralling and remarkable trilogy, whilst its short epilogue will leave fans feeling fully satisfied with the ending.

First thing I can say about this book is that I found the pacing uneven. What I mean is that the previous 2 books had a pretty steady storytelling pace, and while the action was fast and furious you could still picture it all and understand everything, and even when there was no action the story moved along at a nice pace that kept you hooked. I found in Mockingjay that it was incredibly slow getting going, and I found myself skim reading massive paragraphs of text that didn't interest me in the slightest and were, quite frankly, un needed, then towards in the last 100 pages or so there is so much going on that your brain is like o.O what is going on!? It just seemed like one jumbled mess! Why have nothing happen then everything happen at once? I didn't like the feel of this book...it wasn't Katniss' story anymore, it was just all about the events happening around her with her chucked in the middle of it, and since it's all from her point of view we don't really get the big picture. Everything seemed 'too easy' as well... in terms of the rebellion against the capitol, they build it up and then there is no climax!
I disliked Katniss in this book, which is odd because I liked her in the previous 2. She seems like she's not making her own decisions and is little more than a puppet, she's cold towards both Peeta and Gale even though they really didn't do much to deserve it, and she's generally drugged up/hospitalised for the majority of the book -.-. To be honest...she seems pretty pitiable and pathetic, I want the Katniss I know back! OK. This is how I rate the series. Book 1 = 5 stars. Book 2 = 5 stars. Book 3, first half = 5 stars. Book 3, second half = 1 star.
Maybe that's being a bit unfair about the second half of Mockingjay, because without a doubt it was well written, but the faults to me were so enormous that I couldn't get past them.
Suzanne Collins is an incredibly talented author, with an amazing imagination and insight, but she struggles with building any kind of romantic connection or the development of a relationship.
THE FAULTS (***** Spoilers from here *****)
Finnick's Story:
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. His character is developed beautifully. We go from abject dislike through to adoration. A masterclass in developing a character. What drives Finnick is unveiled to us bit by marvellous bit, to reveal a complex character, strong, yet abused and vulnerable who you have to admire. His love story with Annie is one of the highlights of the book for me even though their relationship was hardly touched on. I WANTED him to have his happy ending. Then what happens? The author simply throws him away. Gone. Dead in a couple of sentences without a backward glance. To me it was one of the oddest deaths in any book I've ever read. After all that, Finnick's death was just a plot device to rack up the sense of danger. Nobody's safe! Nobody's safe! It was totally and utterly unnecessary. We already knew that nobody was safe. What a total waste of a good character. Rule Number 1. Leave your readers satisfied. That was one of the most unsatisfactory moments in any book I've ever read. It would have cost the plotline and the energy of the book nothing to leave him intact to go off into the sunset with Annie at the end. All it achieved was a lot of dissatisfied readers....
