Review

"The idea of combining a graphic novel with pop-ups is brilliant." - Robert Sabuda"

Product Description

Call me Ishmael. Three of the most famous words in all literature, they begin Herman Melvilles masterpiece, Moby-Dick. Now, the epic saga of Captain Ahabs obsessive quest for the white whale comes vividly to life in this three-dimensional graphic novel, the first of its kind. This phenomenal work is the creation of multi-talented artist Sam Ita, apprentice to Robert Sabuda, one of the worlds master paper engineers. Every amazing element is awe-inspiring: theres not just one pop-up per spread, but several, surrounded by colourful comic book-style panels that convey the storys drama. Some of the pop-ups are huge and incredibly detailed, like the Pequod itself, which rises gloriously from the page, complete with rigging and flying flag. Others, smaller but no less wonderful, hide beneath flaps and folds. In one instance, readers actually get to look through a 3-D periscope and see Ishamel through the lens, drifting in the ocean. The quality of Itas paper engineering is nothing short of breathtaking - and will carry you off on an unforgettable adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eye-popping pop-up - fabulous stuff, 5 Nov 2007
By M. Harris "Shelley Harris" (Marlow, Bucks, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A friend sent this from Australia for my two kids aged 5 and 7. With the original novel being a grown-up classic weighing in at over 500 pages, it's a brave move for Sam Ita to condense it into a pop-up graphic novel just eight pages long.

However, he pulls it off brilliantly. The pop-up engineering is jaw-dropping. We find ourselves looking at it from many different angles to get every last detail. There are flaps to open, a whirlpool to operate (my kids' favourite part), and a 'close-up' of a little book in a character's hand which you can open and marvel at.

Ita has had to condense the language into eight pages, too. I confess to not having read the original, so I can't tell how judicious his editing is, but the story he relates is clear, the language is arresting, and the whole thing is enough to make you go to the original if you haven't already. Ahab's cry, 'From Hell's heart I stab at thee!' has become my seven-year-old's favourite quotation. Odd, I grant you, but strangely touching.

I just can't think of a better gift for a curious child who loves books, and have already placed my own order as a present for a friend's daughter. My only reservation? If your kids are of a nervous disposition, beware - like the original, the pop-up version contains unflinching scenes of whale hunting.
