Amazon.co.uk Review

Somewhat of an excuse to throw together four hot young actors of the moment in a serious environment, Mobsters nonetheless is a decent treatment of the rise of four of the most infamous gangsters of the 20th century. Christian Slater and Patrick Dempsey play Charlie "Lucky" Luciano and Meyer Lansky, respectively, best friends since they were kids on the mean streets of New York. When Prohibition hits, these young ambitious hoods--along with Bugsy Siegel (Richard Grieco) and Frank Costello (Costas Mandylor) make their move to take over the rackets, even as it jeopardizes their friendship. Featuring cameos by Anthony Quinn, Michael Gambon, and F. Murray Abraham, Mobsters is a guilty pleasure if a not too serious one. --Robert Lane

5.0 out of 5 stars great film, 4 Feb 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Mobsters [VHS] [1991] (VHS Tape)
Great screenplay!

Fairly true to what actually happened to Luciano et al. back then. They did start out as street toughs and end up owning New York, at least on the streets.

Luciano was killed because he tried to make a film of his life when the guys said no.

4.0 out of 5 stars Considerably closer than many others, 13 Oct 2006
This is a very good film. It mimics the actual events of Lucky, bugsy et al. The fact is most of the events in the film hapened. There is considerable documented evidence to support this (see Wikipedia.com for further reference). Please do not write references of films without knowing what you're talking about.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mobsters?, 23 Jun 2003
This review is from: Mobsters [VHS] [1991] (VHS Tape)
I looked forward to this film as I looked forward to getting home and looking at the first edition of mayfair I bought when I was fourteen. I had high expectations as a combination of my adoration for Christian Slater, and interest in the mafia and Charlie Luciano. I thought the film fell well below par. The thought of four youths befriedng each other when they're about 9, then all becoming top criminals of the country seems a little too far fetched for my liking. Gives good background to the organisation called the mafia and its development in the forties and fifties, but on the whole a less than average film. Obviously the film has a lot of truth but even the quality of acting failed to grab my attention and make me watch.
