Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Mobile World saves your hard-earned money, whether you're calling landlines or mobiles around the corner or across the globe. If you're here in the UK but some of your friends or family are overseas, you're definitely in good hands with Mobile World. Mobile World is a 'pay as you go' service, which means you pay for your calls in advance. You can make and receive calls as soon as you're connected and have added a top-up to your account. Mobile World has some impressively low call charges for international calls. You'll find we're cheaper than using BT and the major mobile networks, too. Topping up is easy too; you can visit any Carphone Warehouse store or specially selected high-street retailer or you can top-up by debit card or credit card over the phone, day or night.

International calling:
Mobile World has some impressively low call charges for international calls. You'll find it cheaper than using BT and the major mobile networks, too. It is also more convenient than buying Phone Cards, which makes Mobile World the perfect solution for keeping in touch with friends and family who are overseas.

There's a special way to make international calls on Mobile World. All you need to do is put the magic 2 in front of the number you're calling, then enter the international code (00) and telephone number as usual. It's as simple as:

  • Dial 2 (Accesses International service)
  • Dial 00 (Exit code for UK telephone system
  • Dial the Country Code (e.g. 34 for Spain, 1 for USA)
  • Dial the phone number, including the area code if required
  • Press the green handset key on the mobile to connect the call

If you forget the magic the magic 2 - you'll hear a message saying that your call has been barred, but you won't be charged. You'll be cut off if you run out of credit during an international call, so check your balance before you make any lengthy calls!

UK Calling:
You can make calls as soon as you're connected and have added some credit to your account. With low, low costs for all calls from your mobile, this is where the savings start! Don't worry, you won’t be cut off if you run out of credit during a UK call. This means your mobile account may become slightly 'overdrawn' on occasions, so we'll deduct any extra call charges from your next top-up. When your account reaches zero, you won't be able to make any more calls until you top-up again.

Read the full tariff guide for the UK.

Text Messaging:
A standard text message can include up to 160 characters. Some mobiles let you send messages of more than 160 characters by breaking the message into shorter parts that are reassembled when they arrive on the recipient's mobile. Clever, eh? If your mobile lets you do this, you'll be charged for the number of separate messages you send. By the way, receiving a message from another mobile phone is completely free.

When sending international SMS, you do not need to dial the prefix 2. Only dial the international code and the recipient number. Your SIM card stores up to ten messages. When your SIM card is full, you may not be able to receive any new messages until you delete some of the old ones, although some mobile phones are able to store additional messages.

Voicemail:
Mobile World has a voicemail service that records a message when you don't answer your mobile phone. It'll then let you know that someone's called and will save the message for when it's convenient. Calling voicemail costs less than making a standard UK call. Of course, you're not charged when someone leaves you a message; you only pay when you call the voicemail service yourself.

2.0 out of 5 stars No Roaming, 12 Aug 2006
This review is from: Mobile World SIM Card - Pay As You Go - Low Cost International Calls (Electronics)
I bought this product after reviewing other similar ones hoping to use it in other countries to phone home as well as normal usage. Only after receiving it did it become clear that it is not for use outside of the UK. International means between nations surely? The manual which accompanies it makes it a little clearer. OK if you stay in the UK and make calls to other countries it is a cheap product to use but I believe Mobile World and Amazon should make this point clearer in their decription.

Well, I bought one for my Au Pair and everything looked OK until I found that I can not call her from my Vodafone mobile. Called the customer service and learned that their 'Mobile World SIM' is not pagable by Vodafone and Orange users?!?!?!? Had I know this in advance (no such an information in the adverts available) I definitely would not buy.

So, do not buy this SIM if you want to be contactable by Vodafone and Orange mobiles.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality calls, 30 Jan 2006
This review is from: Mobile World SIM Card - Pay As You Go - Low Cost International Calls (Electronics)
Guy in the CPW shop assured me billing was "per second", but naturally it turned out to be per minute. Annoying when often line quality is poor and you dont get through properly.

They happily tell you "no contract" but the receipt CPW give you and the manual inside is full of small print. I suppose that's the way it is these days. Since you've already handed over your money I'm not sure how much of it would stick in a court. The key point is, though, you just hand over 10 quid, a minimum initial top up of 10 quid and you walk off with a SIM and a small manual in a CD-style jewel box.

As the manual explains, there is a "special" way to make those international calls. You have to dial a "2" before you call, but not for texts. A pain really - it messes up the use of memories. Do you have 2 entries - one with the 2 and one without?

But the main problem is simply getting through. I call the far east and only get through about 50% of the time. Sometimes I have to retry 3 or 4 times. Not sure if I get charged for those failed attempts. When I do get through it seems to take a while, line quality is sometimes rather poor and there is a noticeable delay which can make conversation frustrating. There is no option to miss out the "2" to get a better quality call.

Mobileworld uses the T-mobile network - so if you have a good T-mobile signal you should be OK. You need an unlocked phone to use the SIM - but if its locked to T-mobile it will probably work.

In Taiwan I can get a SIM that uses the normal network and will call the UK for about 10 to 15p per minute and with perfect quality (no silly dialling 2 first)! Why must we either pay through the nose for good quality in the UK or resort to an inferior quality service like Mobile World?

In summary I would treat it as an alternative to "scratch" cards rather than as a replacement for your normal SIM. Not really up to serious business use if you call the far east. Also no roaming capability (as yet). Where possible I'll stick to using a Telediscount type service from a landline.
