Product Description

Review

"MO' META BLUES isn't just a memoir. It's a dialogue about the nature of memory and the idea of a postmodern black man saddled with some postmodern blues. It's the side wind of a one-of-a-kind mind. It's a rare gift that gives as well as takes. It's a record that keeps going around and around. "[MO' META BLUES] is incredible . . . [Questlove is] one of the more unabashed music geeks to ever walk the earth . . . a student of music and pop culture. But, as the book demonstrates, Thompson is also a wonderful storyteller." --Pitchfork.com

Book Description

Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson - the beloved founder/drummer of The Roots and Jimmy Fallon's bandleader - teams up with The New Yorker's Ben Greenman to write a psychedelic memoir on music, black art, culture, and his memoir itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Questlove rules 3 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ok so here I am a 57 year old who grew up listening to Glen Miller , The Beatles then ELP , Led Zeppelin etc and then diversified in musical tastes reggae ,latin, funk ,NewOrleans brass band the list could go on and on ! .. A guy I worked with also a drummer (much younger) tried to introduce me tp Hip Hop and Questlove some years ago unsuccessfully .. Recently I got the Joe Jackson CD which has Questlove playing drums and then I got The Elvis Costello CD with The Roots and I was sold .. The Roots initially I found difficult to grasp but with repeated listening I fell in love with the music .
Mo'Meta Blues is the best music biography I have read , and I have to tell you my CD collection has grown ..It is well put together and the imagery created just took me to the locations being written about .. please don't be put off that some "old Guy" has read this book and really enjoyed it, buy or download a copy you won't be disappointed

Quest starts his memoir how he does his music career: Differently. I have never read a bio like this one and doubt I ever will, but it was amazing. He takes you through his life the only way he knows how: Through soundtracks. He had me thinking of quite a few myself. Loved it. And even if your not a Quest or Roots fan: You will love his stories and fall in love with music all over again

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Insights Into Hip Hop 22 April 2014
By AfxTwn
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'd never heard any of The Roots' music or of much of Questlove himself before reading this book. I bought as it was one of the best books of the year in NME's 2013 list and I have a general love of all type's of music and so thought I'd give it a go.

I wasn't disappointed either. The book takes on an unusual style of telling the author's life story, it mixes interviews between Questlove and his manager/friend and also emails between the books editor and compilers. These segments are mixed in with the normal storytelling aspects but it's good to read different aspects of Quest's life and what other people's memories of the time are, this gives a good juxtaposition to how different people remember the same situation but differently. This is a form of narrative I haven't seen before in an autobiography and keeps the book interesting.

It's also good to read the author's clear love of music and how that is a timeline for him to set out different parts of his life. You get to see what music he enjoyed (or didn't) at different times throughout his life. This is also a great way to learn about the evolution of hip hop in general, if like me and you don't know a lot about the genre.

My only negatives of the book are that it does sometimes get a bit braggy about Questlove and his famous friends but then most autobiographies are guilty of this and towards the end where he is trying to sum up his life and appear more philosophical, this descends into nonsense and over a few pages he just spouts ridiculous statements and questions that don't really mean anything and it comes off as more a nonsensical stream of consciousness than anything else.

On the whole though, this a great read and highly recommended for fans and non-fans alike, both of hip hop and the author.
