I bought this as a Christmas gift but was not, to be frank, expecting much more than a coffee-table book. When I first read about it, I thought it was rather sad to find this sort of merchandising off the back of the books/ TV film; "What would Mma Ramotswe think?", I asked myself ruefully. And then I received a mail from Alexander McCall Smith (not personal, I hasten to add, but I have signed up to his mailing list) and he praised it fulsomely, which made me wonder; and then I ordered a copy, and was entirely bowled over by the love and the care with which the books are written and photographed, the quotations and captions and the accompanying illustrations chosen (Sir Seretse Khama, no less, graces these pages). This is a celebration of food, friendship, Africa and love. I urge you to try it.

This cookbook is a must for Ladies No 1 Detective Agency fans. The recipes are interspersed with quotes from the novels, photos and so on. If you loved the feel of the novels, you'll love this cookbook; it stays true to the spirit of the books.

Recipes included are a selection of cakes and sweets, steaks, stews and curries. It's all pretty hearty, flavoursome stuff; fruitcakes, oxtail stew and vindaloo.

I found some of the cake recipes quite interesting as they use mielie meal flour rather than standard flour, at least partly. As some of my family are allergic to wheat, this was a bonus; the standard flour can be substituted for wheat free.

To be honest, if you're just looking for a comprehensive Southern African cookbook, then this isn't it (having said that, I have yet to come across such a thing and this is a fairly good bet if you're not looking for a book with a great barbecue recipe selection).

The only recipe I was a bit dubious about was the one for boiled biltong. Why boil biltong to rehydrate it when you could just use fresh meat? Maybe I'm missing something though, as in our house biltong wouldn't last long enough to even consider doing anything else with apart from just eating!

Very 'nice to have' book if you are a follower of the Alexander McCall Smith books. As a Soutern African myself, the recipies are true to our region. The dialogue of the characters in the cook book makes it feel like 'real' people cook and eat this food daily. The photography, the food and the people are real.
