About the Artist

Welcome to the second album in the Harmless Mixology series. The first release in the series was Mixology: The Definitive Salsoul Mixes which has been a consistent best-seller since it was released almost exactly one year ago.

The whole point of the Mixology series is to highlight the output of different labels throughout all the eras of Dance music s illustrious history. So it gives us great pleasure to welcome another iconic label into the fold New York s Sam Records a label which not only spanned the 1970 s Disco era successfully with international smashes from Gary s Gang and John Davis & the Monster Orchestra, but also translated perfectly into the 1980s via its consistent cutting edge releases and productions.

Originally started by U.S. music biz veteran Sam Weiss in 1976, Sam Records was mostly active between 1976 to 1983 the key period for Disco and its eventual mutation into the synthesiser driven dance groove of the early 1980 s all areas which were pioneered by Sam Records throughout its history.
Containing 13 brand new scintillating re-edits of key Sam classics by Soul Clap, 6th Borough Project, Todd Terje, Maxxi Soundsystem, Jacques Renault, Andy Ash, Prince Language, Walker & Royce, Runaway, Clinton Houlker, Bonar Bradberry, Volta Bureau & Catz N Dogz plus a 1 hour continuous mix by the compiler, Jacques Renault, Mixology: Sam Records Extended Play is a fascinating example of how well the Sam releases have held up over the last 30 years.

This beautiful package comes in double CD digi pack with 8 page booklet plus notes by Jacques Renault.
As usual, the relentless Harmless PR and Promotion machine will be rolling from now, with a full Radio, Press and Online campaign which will run throughout July and August.

All fantastic songs so why only 1 star? Well, again like all reviews,it's only my opinion but whereas the Philedelphia re edits was a great success this is poor by comparison. Remember when you used to buy these great 12" singles and find the 8 minute instrumental on the B side (or "Dub" mix?) Well here we have 2 CD's choc full of them. Loads of tedious remixes that do nothing for the originals. SAM is a renowned dance label and all the tracks on this are testament to that but not in this state.Which baffles me.. why give you 2 CD's of the same thing when 1 cd of remixes and one with the originals would have been great. The Salsoul MIXOLOGY CD was great, this is not. Fortunately there are a few good SAM compilations to be had on AMAZON so grab one of these as they all have the original 12" versions. As for this i wouldn't bother if i were you. Mine has had one play and it has now retired! What a waste! I am a huge Ian Dewhirst fan but this one has missed the mark. In fairness ,if i was marking the presentation and booklet a definite 4 stars. So there you go we got to 5 in the end!

I should have read the fine print first instead of just clicking on the "buy" link.

The tracks on this collection is not the original extended versions, they are modern remixes. Some of them are quite conservative edits, some are complete reworkings. The remixes are mostly tolerable, but they were not what I expected.

Actually, I liked the DJ-mixed version of the songs on CD2 better than the individual tracks.

If you are looking for the original SAM boogie, I think that you are better off with SAM Records - Extended Play - 12" Disco Classics or for a broader view of the early 80's boogie scene, Boogie'S Gonna Getcha - 80'S New York Boogie.
