Product Description

Fran Varady isn't keen to help seedy club owner Mickey Allerton track down Lisa, a dancer who's done a bunk. But since Mickey's holding Fran's dog Bonnie hostage till the job's done, she doesn't have much choice. She quickly locates Lisa and they arrange to meet - but when Fran gets there early, the first thing she sees is a body floating in the river. It's Ivo, one of Mickey's nastier bouncers. If Lisa wasn't terrified already, she is when she gets this news, and Fran finds herself torn between helping the frightened girl and doing Mickey's bidding. And it's all about to get a lot more complicated...

Fran Varady 18 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback
The story begins when club owner Micky Allerton holds Fran's dog Bonnie hostage, manipulating Fran into making a trip to Oxford to persuade Lisa to call him. Simple but deceptive. Fran relates her unwelcome adventures in an intimate, laid back style, like a traditional gumshoe detective. She is a 22-year old actor to whom stuff happens. The cast of characters lumbers into view with understated menace mixed with charm and humour. Even minor characters have distinctive personalities. The writing is stylish. Savour the scene when Fran is interrogated in a police interview room, her attention focussed on a trapped wasp.

Easy reading 30 Sep 2011

Format:Paperback
Even though you think you know the ending there's always that little twist in the plot. Nice to read before dropping off to sleep - no nightmares about violence and gorey bits. Really enjoyed reading it.

Mixing with the mob 18 Sep 2005
By Beverley Strong - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Semi amateur PI and sometime actor, Fran Varady, receives a summons from night club owner and heavy man, Mickey Allerton, who wishes her to locate one of his pole dancers, Lisa, who has walked off the job and vanished, leaving him strangely distraught. Fran reluctantly accepts the commission, only because Mickey is holding her dog as hostage until the job is done, and travels to Oxford, where it's thought that Lisa may be staying with her parents. Mickey has booked Fran into a B and B, owned by Beryl, one of his former employees, where she joins a curiously disparate group of residents which includes a Croatian woman who is working for Beryl as a chambermaid, in order to improve her English. Fran locates Lisa who agrees to meet her by the river, but as Fran waits for her arrival, the body of another Croatian, Ivo, the doorman at Mickeys' club, floats to the bank of the river. Understandably alarmed, Fran conceals her knowledge of his identity from the police, much to the alarm of her buddy, Ganesh, with whom she has kept in touch by means of his mobile phone which she has borrowed. As Frans' investigation progresses, Lisa proves to be very far from the innocent victim she has portayed herself to be to both her parents and to Mickey, and lots of action occurs before the satisfactory conclusion of Frans' case. Fran is a very likeable and believable heroine and I'd like to read more about her adventures.
