Book Description

15 Aug 2005
For Venus Stanton, the attractive young vicar of Thurston, life could not be better. When she first came to this traditional parish, with its beautiful church and conservative congregation, many people found it hard to accept a woman priest. After a tricky start, however, she is now accepted by most of her parishioners, even though some people cannot and will not recognize her. But vicars have their personal lives as well, although many people often forget this, and to the delight and surprise of the parish Venus is to marry Nigel, the doctor from the local practice. Her eleven-year-old daughter Becky, after some misgivings, has accepted the idea and there is a joyous ceremony at the church, after which the happy pair set off for honeymoon in France. On their return, they try to settle down to their new life, but Venus soon finds that marriage, motherhood and her priestly duties do not always go together…

5.0 out of 5 stars A true to life read 24 Feb 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is a wonderfull book, written with an obvious great knowledge of church life, as an Ordained elder of the church of Scotland I can recognise every character in our church and I bet you will too. I couldnt put it down, but please read the first book in this series first " A Blessing In Disguise"
Elvi Rhodes is a writter who just captivates you on every page.

1.0 out of 5 stars very mixed blessings 14 Dec 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback
A very pedestrian book, with large amounts of unnecessary detail in the writing. Slow paced in terms of action - and something a little unreal about the whole story line.
For anyone who is a real live priest the writing presents a rose tinted view of parish life. I have yet to hear a priest take a call from the funeral director, and say immediately, yes 2.00 on Thursday is fine! Similarly I know few priests who have the luxury of being able to hang around the church door 20 minutes before the congregation arrives to meet and greet.
