Product Description

Amazon.co.uk
Having long since shed their image as hip-hop's clown princes, the Beastie Boys now bring what feels like their emeritus recording, a celebratory instrumental memoir of all of the influences (except punk) that brought them to their secure place among hip-hop's fickle elite. The party opens with the aptly titled "B for My Name," its plodding bounce staking claim to the mid-tempo path the album treads almost throughout. "14th St. Break" picks up the pace, especially in the auxiliary percussion breakdown, complete with rally whistle. Then, beginning with "Suco de Tangerina," the album drops into a deep groove cut from dub- and dancehall-tinged ostinati that carry through a full third of its tracks. Among these, "The Gala Event" suffers from a lack of developmental motion that characterises many of these tracks, but highlights still abound. "Off the Grid," for example, departs from the otherwise unbreakable chill and rips the proceedings wide open, blooming again and again in a series of pulsing riffs that celebrate the very institution of the instrumental groove. More than 20 years since Licensed to Ill took a long, irreverent piss into the mainstream, it seems you can still fight for your right to party. --Jason Kirk

CD Description
'The Mix Up' is the second instrumental album from legendary rappers Beastie Boys, but their first to be made up of entirely new material. Produced, written and played by Adrock, MCA and Mike D, the album sees the trio delve into their eclectic mix of influences managing to combine funk, jazz, rockand classic sixties electronica into their own undeniably unique sound.

3.0 out of 5 stars Oodles of Noodles, 26 Jun 2007

I've always been an appreciator of the Beastie Boys since those goofy days of Licensed to Ill. They are a progressive act, developing themsleves and their sound as the last 20 odd years (gulp) of recording has gone by. But, without wishing to state the obvious, they have remained popular because of their hip hop/rap talent and, in turn, their original interpretation of it. A wholly instrumental long player is going to be that..........a LONG player. Don't get me wrong, as individual tracks the material is definately worth a listen. It takes me back to their chilled out sessions for Check Your Head which was probably the bands creative peak (with Paul's Boutique of course). I'm no musical history expert but if you want a sound comparison I'd say this is somewhere between Cafe Bleu era Style Council and Hamilton Bohannon. Stand out tracks on first listen are B For My Name, Off the Grid and The Cousin of Death but as with any Beastie album, it's likely to florish on further listening. Don't get me wrong, it'll be a great CD for listening to whilst driving or for relaxing to throughout the summer but I gotta admit, I miss the words. Still spitting hot fire but perhaps consuming too many fumes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Instumental mentality, 9 Jun 2007

This review is from: The Mix-Up (Audio CD)
First off, this aint your avearge Beasties LP. No rapping from Ad Rock, MCA or Mike D, but plenty of chillin' instrumentals. If you liked "The In Sounds From Way Out", then you're sure to dig this collection of chilled out grooooooves. Almost trip-hop in places, with hints of dub, soul and pretty much any other pigeon-hole catagory you can think of, this is an album to come down to. If you're looking for a right-to-party to fight for - this is a long way off but, if you fancy something a little different to kick back to look no further. I'm lovin' it. relax, give it a couple of listens and it'll be on at the very end of all your part sessions.

Firstly, for any spelling/grammar pedants, the title I chose for this review is not a typo, but a useage of the title of a track from this album.

Now we have got that out of the way, I was given this album as a completely random gift. I am not really into The Beastie Boys but this is just an instrumental album.

The instrumentals are very similar to what you'd expect from The Beasties, just obviously you're able to really hear them better as that's all there is to listen to.

I can easily imagine this being played in a cool bar in Hoxton or somewhere. It's a very solid album and also very chilled and relaxed and relaxing. Each track flows effortlessly into the next and it's a pleasure to listen to and unwind to.
