5.0 out of 5 stars Psychic Circle pulls out the stops 13 Feb 2008
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have purchased many of the albums on the new Psychic Cirlce label and there output varys from Folk rock, Psychedlia and Mod Soul & beat. This album focuses on the British soul output of the 60s and early seventies. Unlike other compilations, unless you collect vinyl then many of these tracks will be new to you and never released on compilations before.
This album has 20 tracks which are all very good, if you like the Riot Squad, Artwoods , Georgie fame style Soul, then this album will certainly please you. Graham Bonney (ex Riot Squad) version of Get Ready is a great dancefloor track, followed by a further 19 danceable tracks (except for Bobby Sansoms version of Handbags). Great versions of well known tracks and excellent originals. Check out the other two volumes in this series and the Mod R&B albums released on the same label, Well done Psychic Circle for pulling out all the stops.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mix a Fix 25 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Okay, I'll confess - I only bought this CD because of the title track. As anyone who has heard "Mix a Fix" by Haydock's Rockhouse will know, it is one HELL of a record. Turn up the volume, get your best 60s togs on and play this song - you will have a ball. However, the vast majority of the material on here is not up to these standards. There's "Without Reservations" by Simon Dupree and the Big Sound (a great track, but I had heard it elsewhere) and er, that's about all.
Having said that, this is not a bad collection; most of the stuff is quite listenable and enjoyable, but it's just not groundbreaking, in the way that "Mix A Fix" is (or is for me, anyway!). If you have never heard "Mix A Fix" before, a much better compilation with it is "Take My Tip"; now, that is what I call a 5* collection!

I'd recommend `Mix a Fix' on the basis of it being an interesting record of the genre, and period; this compilation pulses with the enthusiasm and creativeness of the 60s. It's a Go-Go writ large, and whilst some of the tracks might seem a little below par, it's another interesting collection of lesser known British Beat/soul, like Psychic Circle's `Get Ready'.
One of the featured artists, Gene Latter, did, of course, feature on a Casino Classics Compilation....
