Book Description

30 Sep 2013
Mitch Dobrowner has been chasing storms since 2005. Working with professional storm chaser Roger Hill, Dobrowner has traveled throughout Western and Midwestern America to capture nature in its full fury, making extraordinary images of monsoons, tornados, and massive thunderstorms with the highest standard of craftsmanship and in the tradition of Ansel Adams. Dobrowner, a graphic designer by trade, says, As I researched the subject of storm systems and how they formed, I came to appreciate the complexity of these large structured super-cellsmassive storms with deep, rotating updrafts that sometimes spawn tornadoes. As a photographer, I always count myself lucky to get to the right place at the right time. Dobrowners storm series has attracted considerable media interest (National Geographic, Time, New York Times Magazine, among others) and is presented in Storms in a deluxe, largeformat yet affordable edition. The book features an introduction by Gretel Ehrlich that focuses on the phenomenon of storms and on the landscape tradition of the American West.

5.0 out of 5 stars Storms, by Mitch Dobrowner is gorgeous! 17 Oct 2013

Received my copy of Storms by Mitch Dobrowner, which is a hardcover book in wide format print, containing beautiful images of Storms all across the country. The opening is a bit "strange" ... but the section written by Dobrowner himself is excellent. He details how he does what he does - which is beautiful and inspiring. Recommend this as something you will look through again and again. Also - the kids loved it, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thunderstorm portraiture well done. 20 Nov 2013

Mitch Dobrowner has given us 51 splendid black and white images of thunderstorms. These are well done in wide format. The beauty and power of the storms is well depicted. Several of the images include tornadoes. The Introduction is by Gretel Ehrlich and is a beautiful artsy evocation of thunderstorms. The Afterwood is by Mitch himself, and gives his history and joy in photographing thunderstorms.

The locations are from the Great West, South Dakota, Nebraska, Texas, Kansas, Montana and other states in between. From Mitch's Afterword, it appears he and a storm chasing friend would locate a developing storm and drive hundreds of miles all day watching it develop, mature, and age, taking photographs the whole time. Mitch says they would many times drive upwards of 7,000 to 9,000 miles in 10 days chasing the storms. The images prove it was worth the effort.

Living in Nebraska, and having watched and lived through storms all my life, I can appreciate the beauty and the power of these storms that Mitch has taken portraits of.

Mitch ends his Afterword with "My job is to capture a portrait of each storm I encounter, an image that does each storm justice as if the storm were a person, who I got to spend a day with to make a portrait. I want to get a photograph of a storm that I can hold up to the storm, and say, "What do you think? And the storm we be, like, "Okay, you got me!" And I agree, Mitch got the personality of each storm right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple Beautiful! 23 Nov 2013
By John - Published on Amazon.com
As someone who has loved weather all his life and grew up in Western Nebraska, I was excited when I saw this book, espcially after the crazy and unfortunately tragic 2013 storm season.

Dowbrowner has put together an absolutely fantastic book. The prints are more than breath taking. I myself have chased storms and know how difficult and sometimes precarious it can be getting into position for just the right shots. Dowbrowner somehow managed in a few short years with no chasing background to capture, Ansel Adams style shots of amazing weather phenomena.

Additionally, when buying photography books or coffee table books the authors notes and writing are mostly just annoying and frankly boring, sort of like asking a writer to illustrate their own book covers, usually it just doesn't work. However I found myself wanting to read more of his dissertation into his photographic journey throughout the Midwest. It was done perfectly.

If you are at all a fan of storms, photography, or simply amazing shots you would want framed prints of hanging all over you house, get this book!
