Leigh Eduardo quotes the dictionary definitions of a mistress as 'a kept woman; a female favourite; a paramour; a woman (other than his wife) with whom a married man has a (usually prolonged) sexual relationship; a woman who has a continuing extramarital relationship with a man.' He also points out that the same terms were equally applicable to a courtesan, with some variations.
His eight 'true stories of seduction, power and ambition' range over all of the above. From 17th Century Barbara Villiers to 20th Century Marion Davies each story contains concisely written accounts of outstanding lives and loves. Packed with absorbing detail, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book about extraordinary women whose courage in pursuing love and excitement is totally enthralling. Their tales range from joy to sadness, and even horror. Anybody who enjoys reading biography will find Eduardo's book a great addition to their book shelves.
