Merryn Fenner is on a mission to ruin the Duke of Farne. A beautiful bluestocking with a penchant for justice, Merryn has waited ten years to satisfy her revenge against sensual, mysterious Garrick Northesk. Her family name had been tarnished at his hands, her life destroyed. And now she intends to return the favor--by finding the "true" heir to the duke's title and disinheriting Garrick.

Yet when a disaster traps Merryn and Garrick together, white-hot desire stirs between the two sworn enemies. Her reputation utterly compromised, Merryn is forced to do the one thing she cannot bear: accept the scandalous marriage proposal of the man she has vowed to ruin.

Mistress by Midnight 22 Nov 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the third book in Nicola Cornicks Scandalous woman of the ton series, coming after Whisper of Scandal (MIRA), and One Wicked Sin (MIRA). It focuses on the story of Lady Merryn Fenner and Garrick, Duke of Farne. Merryn was first intoduced in Whisper of Scandal, as Joanna's younger sister, and Garrick was introduced in One wicked sin, as Ethans half brother.

Merryn, the overlooked bluestoking sister of two of the tons most fabulous socialites, has a secret life working bringing justice to people. She is haunted by her brothers early death, killed in a duel against his best friend, who she holds a strong overwhelming hatred for. Garrick, has just reluctently inheritied the title of Duke of Farne after his brutish fathers death. He has only recently returned from exile overseas after killing a man in a duel...
When they first meet, there is an instant connection, but is there too much history and emotion inbetween them for them ever to get their happy ending?

This book was truely delicious. I couldnt put it down, and would rush back to it between readings, desperate for the happy ending. Both characters jumped off the page and felt truely life like. The plot had many unexpected twists and turns: some hilarious, some shocking, and some heart warming, which made for great reading. This was one of my all time favourite Nicola Cornick books, everyone should read it!

First I have to admit that I didn't read the first two novels in this series, but this didn't lessen my reading joy a bit. I'm a big fan of Nicola Cornick's writing and once again she didn't disappoint. This book is very amusing, with lively dialogues and interesting characters.

Merryn is a naive 25-year old noblewoman who is determined to revenge her dead brother, who was killed in a duel by Garrick Northesk. In contrast to most young women of the tom she isn't interested at all in balls, gifts and a husband. She loves books, research and intellectual topics. Garrick in contrast has seen to much of the world and is a very lonely man who is despised by a lot of people and at the same time sought-after because of his title.

When they meet they immediately are attracted to each other. Garrick is especially fascinated by Merryn. Then he realises that she is hell-bound on taking revenge on him and that by doing she so she would unintentionally reveal a well-hidden secret. It becomes clear very fast that something is odd. Garrick behaves noble and without any mean intentions quite contrary to the story of the duel and the killing of his formerly best friend. But Marry is blind to all obvious facts and this became annoying at some point.

This book has a all the classic features of an historical romance: a naive but lovely heroine, a suffering but noble hero, a dark, hidden secret/past and a lot of attraction. And though this all sounds like a cliché I loved how Nicola Cornick formed a very individual romance. And I love how she integrated some interesting historic facts like the beer flood.

For me this was an almost perfect historical romance. I liked the characters and how they developed. I especially liked the banter between the main characters. The plot was convincing and the ending was great.

"Mistress by Midnight" is the third book in the `The Scandalous Women of the Ton' series by Nicola Cornick, and the best so far in my opinion. Although the format is very much the same with each novel I really enjoy Cornick's style of writing, it's very easy to read and her stories seem to suck me in from the first chapter. She is fast becoming one of my favourite historical romance authors.

Our heroine is Merryn Fenner, a young woman in her early twenties who is quite different from the other ladies of the ton. Merryn isn't much into fashion and grand balls and thinks being a debutante is a tedious business. She would rather curl up with a good book, go to the theatre or attend lectures to broaden her mind.

Merryn is an intellectual, educated woman and is working secretly for an inquiry agency as a working woman, which is not the done thing in high society. Her main aim is taking revenge on the Duke of Farne for the death of her brother and the pain he caused ten years before.

At five feet tall, she maybe small, but she's feisty and smart. I loved the way that when she became angry, and this usually happened when around Garrick, she lifts her chin and marches off in the opposite direction to show her displeasure. She is just so cute. I can totally understand why Garrick would be utterly taken with her.

Garrick Northesk, the Duke of Farne is our hero and he's one of my all time favourites. I just fell hook line and sinker for this particular gentleman. He's strong and gorgeous, but sweet and caring with a touch of vulnerability, a great combination. He has a dark past which is revealed slowly and the outcome surprises all, especially Merryn...

Both Merryn and Garrick are wonderful characters. I fell in love with both of them. They are so lonely and yet don't want to admit it. They both have a past that continues to weave its way into their present and prevents them from giving in to their feelings. But this restraint is what gives their relationship so much fire and passion. Their dialogue is wonderful, at times very witty and at other times intense and tender. Their relationship takes time to grow, which made the happy ending so much more satisfying.

VERDICT:

Another wonderful historical romance from Ms Cornick. If you haven't read this author before then I recommend you do - I'm sure you won't be disappointed, especially if you love historical romance. "Mistress by Midnight" is a fabulous read and I would recommend it just for the jail scene alone *fans self*
