This is what it says on the back cover:

Mistress or Marriage?
by Elizabeth Rolls
Viscount Helford needed to marry and wanted to choose a wife of nobility and decorum-untill his resolve was shaken by the fiery Miss Marsden. If he took her as his mistress, it would tarish her good name-something he knew she couldn't afford to lose. But could he afford to lose her?

A Rouguish Gentleman
by Mary Brendan
Viscount Stratton was renowned for his beautiful mistresses. Owed money by Lady Elizabeth Rowe's family, his only hope of repayment was through her sizeable dowry-and he would have to marry her to claim it! Lady Elizabeth had no desire to wed such a rogue, but had he really pursued their union for revenge...or love?

I liked both stories, both would bring you back to the era (although I wasn't personally there). The first story features a women and her orphaned nephew, both women leads are strong characters. The second story is of one of the characters (a roguish handsom man) taken from Mary Brendan's previous book (book n.o 5 of the collection, the sliver squire) but it wouldn't infringe too much if you hadn't read that one. Great reads although I have found with all of them so far (books 1-6) that it draggs a bit and could all have been a little shorter.

Buy the book for BOTH stories! 28 May 2011

While I saw that both prior reviews of this book only referred to the first story, "Mistress or Marriage" which I enjoyed quite well, than you. However, I stayed up late to finish reading the second story "A Roguish Gentleman" by Mary Brendan. It appears I have found a new (to me, at least) author to read!
Lady Elizabeth Rowe was the subject of a Regency scandal ten years prior. Viscount Stratton is owed money by Elizabeth's family, and the only way he can get the money is to marry Elizabeth for her dowry. Elizabeth does not want to marry at all. The plot is spiced up by the most conniving grandmother! (OK, she's a love, too) I loved the depth of the Ms Brendan's characterizations, her realistic dialogue, and her insight into the mind of someone who has gone through emotional trauma. The lesser characters have just the right amount of "time" and variation in type (from nice to downright nasty) in the novel, and each affect the outcome of the story. Oh yes, they marry, but you will enjoy all the twists and turns of the story.
