Christmas is drawing close, and Lucy Stone has plenty on her plate. Not only does she have presents to buy and make, kids to care for, and visiting relatives to prepare for, but she works part time for Country Cousins, the mail order company located in the small town of Tinker's Cover, Maine. And that's before she discovers Country Cousins President Sam Miller dead in the employee parking lot.
While the scene was staged to look like an accident, the police quickly rule it a murder. Lucy's curiosity is certainly aroused. And when she starts hearing clues in the small town's grape vine, her list of suspects grows. But will she learn enough to find the killer?
I must admit I first met Lucy in the Candy Cane Murder anthology and enjoyed that story enough to come for a full visit. That was a bit of a mistake, however, because a few small details were different, which confused me. Continuity errors. Gotta love them.
I got past that pretty quickly, but I still found the book only mediocre. The plot moves very slowly in the first half, getting too bogged down in details of daily life. The story did pick up in the second half. Still, I found the climax rather weak. The characters were interesting enough to keep me reading until the end. The book was poorly edited, however. Twice I spotted contradictory information on the same page.
This isn't a bad debut. But it isn't a good one, either. I know many love this series, but I think I will pass on Lucy's further adventures.
