Amazon.co.uk Review

Henry Fonda recreated his Broadway hit for this 1955 film that was mostly directed by Fonda's frequent collaborator, John Ford (Young Mr Lincoln, My Darling Clementine)--an ailing Ford was replaced at some point by Mervyn LeRoy--and the results are exceptionally fine. A perfect cast, including James Cagney's irascible captain, William Powell's thoughtful physician and Jack Lemmon's Oscar-winning Ensign Pulver, give Fonda the right boost to portray his ennui-burdened officer with dignity, self-effacing humour, and not a trace of self-pity. Mister Roberts is a wonderful film. --Tom Keogh

Synopsis

Wry comedy tale about the bored and restless crew of a cargo ship, all eager to see a bit of wartime action. James Cagney stars as the eccentric captain.

3.0 out of 5 stars Jack Lemmon saves the film, 30 Jun 2007

Given that "Mr Roberts" enjoyed the pedigree of being based upon one of Broadway's most succesful plays, which also starred Fonda, teams up Hank Fonda with fellow screen legend James Cagney as well as the emerging Jack Lemmon, all under the directorial hand of the great John Ford, it fails to live up to the collaborative sum of it's parts.

That Fonda had a massive falling out with Ford, the man who made him a star, is apparent given that Ford couldn't be bothered finishing the film and left rather a mis-shapen movie to Warner Bros. journeyman director Mervyn LeRoy to tidy up. LeRoy does well with what he had, and the film has some memorale moments, usually centred around Lemmon. Cagney and Fonda both sell themselves short and are rather pedestrian, but for completists of either of these legends the film is a must for the value of them working together alone.

Don't get me wrong, Mr Roberts isn't a bad film, it's just that with such a crew, one really would have expected far more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Forgotten Oscar Winner, 24 Aug 2007
By J. Duducu (Ruislip) - See all my reviews

Some war films show war is hell. This maybe true but ask any veteran what war is like and they'll ultimately tell you it's an hour of sheer terror followed by days of boredom. This is one of the few films to show you what military personnel do with their spare time. It also has a message- treat the men well and look after their legitimate needs and they'll look after you- something that many modern companies would do well to remember.

Ultimately it's about a supply ship in the pacific and "Mister Roberts" is the popular lieutenant who hates the captain and wants to see some action but because the captain knows this he won't let him off the ship. So cagney and fonda are set up for a clash of ideals. Add to this a laid back doctor and a wound up Jack Lemmon and you have superb actors working from an excellent script.

The banter and camaraderie is great and the scene where everyone is returning from shore leave is still funny over 50 years later. We are talking about some of the best actors of the age all together chewing the scenery. It is based on a play so expect talk not action but the verbal sparring and serious subtexts all add together for the perfect Sunday afternoon film.
